Rickie Fowler's best Phil Mickelson tale
Or at least this is the best Phil Mickelson tale we could print.
I played golf with Rickie Fowler last Wednesday and wrote about that experience here. I didn't have room in that story for what Fowler told me about Phil Mickelson so I decided to make that its own post.
It's about ping pong and it's about as Mickelson as it gets.
I asked Fowler if ping pong is usually the choice of sport outside of golf for PGA Tour golfers.
"Probably, as far as a universal like 'everyone’s at least decent at it' sport — when I’m home in Florida we have a table at the house and we'll mess around. Masters, usually have a table at the house that we rent. Ryder Cup, there’s always a ping pong table there."
So what about your Phil story?
Fowler: "Ryder Cup 2010, it was fun watching him and Kooch (Matt Kuchar) go at it in ping pong. Because Phil gets lessons before the Ryder Cup in ping pong."
Me: "Wait does he fly somebody to San Diego?"
Fowler: "Probably, I don’t know. No, he would get actual ping pong lessons and show up with his own paddles. And then there’s Kooch, just waxed him. Kooch was good. Zach’s pretty good, as well. I think Zach beat Kooch a couple times but Kooch is holding down the court right now."
Hiring his own ping pong coach and still getting buried by Kuchar. You have to come stronger than that, Phil.
