The history of golf is undefeated. In the modern era there's never been a lapse in superstars. Tom Watson took over for Jack Nicklaus who took over for Arnold Palmer who took over for Ben Hogan and so on.

Tiger Woods is the most recent example of this, obviously, but now he has company.

Rory McIlroy, after winning the 2014 PGA Championship, has four majors at the age of 25 and well that trajectory is a Tiger- or Jack-like trajectory.

Here's a look:

At the age of 25 Tiger had six, Nicklaus had four, Gary Player had two, Tom Watson had one, and nobody else on this list had any. Again, these are six of the 12 best golfers ever.

Obviously we have a long, long way to go and so many things can happen but so many people who know so much more about golf are convinced Rory can name his number.

Last week Nicklaus said the Ulsterman could win "15 or 20 majors."

His contemporaries agree:

History has company.
