Welcome back to the Scottish Open, Rory McIlroy.

The Ulsterman hasn't played this event since 2009 but showed no signs of rust on the links as he shot a course-record 64 on Thursday at Royal Aberdeen in Scotland.

It actually could have been better, too. He burned the edge of the cup on several birdie attempts on the back nine and made only one bogey en route to his spectacular 7 under score.

"This time last year, I was trying to get the ball under control, not very confident with anything," said McIlroy.

Yeah, that was pretty clear as you can see in this horrific shot from last year's British Open:

"I feel I am as prepared as I have ever been to play this type of golf," McIlroy added.

It certainly showed on Thursday as McIlroy went out in 33 and then birdied four of his first five on the back nine to shoot 31. That back nine included an embarrasingly long 436-yard drive at the par-4 13th hole that resulted in birdie.

"Everything was pretty much on," McIlroy said, "in the conditions, this is as low as I have ever been."

It's also as low as anyone at Royal Aberdeen has ever been. McIlroy led by one over Sweden's Kristoffer Broberg at the time he finished in the morning wave at Royal Aberdeen.

McIlroy hasn't been particularly grand at links tournaments in the past. He finished T46 at the 2009 Scottish Open and only has one top 10 appearance at the British Open and was even cut last year.

If he has "everything on" though like he did on Thursday, look out, because he could pull off the Scottish/British double just like Phil Mickelson did one year ago.
