Rory McIlroy putts into a bunker, shoots 79
Rory McIlroy was terrible in his first round at Muirfield on Thursday, shooting an 8-over-par 79 that including a putt that sailed off the green and into a bunker.
Rory McIlroy had a day that likely left Nick Faldo chuckling to himself. Faldo criticized McIlroy's practice efforts in advance of the British Open earlier this week, saying he needed to practice longer. To which McIlroy responded, "I actually was on the range at 6:15 and got out of the gym at 6:15, actually a 12-hour day compared to his eight-hour day."
So that was fun.
Then, McIlroy promptly went out in Thursday's first round at Muirfield and posted this scorecard:
So that was equally fun.
One of those double bogeys (the one on No. 15) came as a result of the putt into the bunker that you see above.
McIlroy was all over the place on the back nine. He missed nearly every fairway and wasn't even close on most of his putts.
It seems like his struggles are 100 percent in his head. He said as much afterward:
"You've just got to play through it. It's got nothing to do with technique. It's all mental."
Here's hoping he plays through it soon.
