Rory McIlroy shoots 69, maintains lead at Honda Classic
McIlroy is looking for his first PGA Tour win since the end of 2012.
Rory McIlroy shot a clean little 69 on Saturday at the Honda Classic to maintain his lead going into Sunday. He leads by two over Russell Henley, three over Russell Knox and four over Johnattan Vegas.
He's 12 under through three rounds and poised to reintroduce himself to golf's upper crust.
The Ulsterman burned edges all day with his putter and the lead really could have been bigger.
If there was one hole that epitomized McIlroy's day, and probably week, it was the par-3 17th.
He hit a decent tee shot to the fringe and pumped a 42-footer right at the cup. It bent back toward the hole but just barely scooted past.
He tapped it in for par and gave that not-quite-pompous McIlroy smile that lets you know he definitely knows just how good he actually is.
Here's a look at McIlroy's card on the day:
So now McIlroy will try to close out his first PGA Tour victory since the 2012 BMW Championship at Crooked Stick. He will also try to set the four-round scoring record at PGA National (currently 13 under held by Camilo Villegas).
It's a crowded leaderboard right now but the kid's a closer and nobody with a deep history of winning tough tournaments is pushing him.
McIlroy has slammed the door on 54-hole leads the last 4 times he held them. Hasn't failed to do so since the '11 Masters, when he shot 80.— Randall Mell (@RandallMellGC) March 1, 2014
We should be in for a pretty grand Sunday afternoon.
