The new Match Play Championship format is pretty cool
The match play championship looks to the World Cup for inspiration for its new format.
"The Match Play Championship is going all World Cup in its San Francisco debut."
It's true, too. The 2015 Match Play Championship will be played at Harding Park the week before the Players Championship and it will be formatted as a round robin tournament.
In lieu of goals scored as a tiebreaker the tournament will use head-to-head results to break two-way ties and sudden-death playoffs for three-way ties.
The round of 16 as it were will be played on Saturday morning with the quarterfinals in the afternoon. Then the semis and finals will be played on Sunday just like they are now.
This is a great move for the tournament as you'll get more than 17 (or whatever) holes out of the better players like Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.
"Part of our thinking was we wanted the best possible place to showcase this format for the future of Match Play," said PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem.
A great move to make what should be a great tournament even better.
