The morning session at Hazeltine National Golf Club got off to a fast start for the Americans with three of the four groups making the turn with the United States team in the lead.

One of those pairings that took a lead with them to the turn was the duo of Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler, which charged back from 2 Down midway through the front nine to win the final three holes of the front side to go 1 Up at the turn. To win the ninth hole, the Americans got a chip-in birdie from Fowler that elicited a huge eruption from the crowd on hand.

That chip-in capped off the Americans' front nine rally against Rory McIlroy and Andy Sullivan that came after some disastrous play in the middle of the round put them down two.
