First Doral, now Woods loses in own backyard

His putt not only failed to make it to the top shelf of the green, the ball rolled backward, off a side slope and into the closely-mowed fairway, farther from the flag than he'd been before he putted. He failed to get up and down and made a bogey, ending his chances of winning.

"All that's needed is a windmill," cracked Mick Doran, the caddie for Justin Rose, of the brutally difficult putting surface.

A moment later on the same green, Rose canned a 60-footer for an eagle and it took every bit of restraint he could muster to suppress a smirk when Woods looked his way.

"I nearly said to Tiger, 'Thanks for the read,'" Rose laughed afterward.

In the first group off the tee, Lake Nona's Annika Sorenstam shot a 3-under 69 from the women's tees to beat Isleworth rookie Paula Creamer. Then the two shared a plane flight to the West Coast, where they will play the next two LPGA events in Phoenix and the Palm Springs area.

As for Holmes, him being a fairly new member and all, perhaps they forgot to tell him how difficult Isleworth is supposed to play from the back tees under punishing tour conditions.

"Trust me, this course has gotten the better of me several times," he said.

This time, he took care of Woods and his famed home course in the same fell swoop.
