Finland's Blomqvist breaks the ice on course, off
This is not a snow-related crack, but she was just getting warmed up. Blomqvist's boyfriend of seven years is fellow Finn Roope Kakko, who plays on the developmental Challenge Tour in Europe. Actually, he's Blomqvist's fiancé, though she is facing a future quandary.
"You should feel bad for me about his surname, because it is not very nice," she said. "Kakko means s--t in Finnish, it is very close. I am not very happy about that if we are going to stay together."
The good news is, she's not stinking up Interlachen, to be sure. She caddied for Kakko in a Challenge Tour event earlier this month and he finished second. Blomqvist said she made him fork over the usual caddie salary of 8 percent of his winnings.
"Of course," she said. "I am not cheap."
That Blomqvist is among the leaders comes as a middling surprise, since she has never won an LPGA event and hasn't finished better than third this year. She wasn't expecting such scrutiny, either.
"I'm upset because I didn't put my makeup on today," she cracked as a phalanx of TV cameras zoomed tight. "I didn't think I was going to play that well. I should be looking nice for the media."
No worries there. She's looking great and sounding even better.
