SUN CITY, South Africa (AP) -Robert Allenby has taken the lead after the first round of the Nedbank Golf Challenge with a 4-under 68 Thursday, after Retief Goosen's late blunders put him to second place.
Allenby had three birdies on the front nine and added a fourth on the 14th hole. He aims to become the first Australian to win the 29-year-old invitational tournament.
Goosen was at 4 under after 11 holes but bogeyed the 14th and had a double-bogey on the 15th to drop down the leaderboard. He salvaged the round with an eagle on the par-4 17th to sit tied for second with fellow South African Tim Clark.
Rory McIlroy had an inconsistent round, mixing six bogeys with five birdies to finish tied for 10th.
