McIlroy grabs clubhouse lead in Dubai
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy grabbed the clubhouse lead in the second round of the Dubai Desert Classic Friday, shooting a seven-under 65 for a two shot lead over Martin Kaymer.
McIlroy, three shots back after the first round, surged into contention with a string of birdies. He birdied his first two holes, chipped in for birdie on his eighth and then saw his eagle putt on No. 9 lip out. He finished with seven birdies and a two round total of 131.
The fourth-ranked Kaymer kept pace for much of the day, holding a share of the lead after 11. But then McIlroy birdied the 12th and Kaymer three-putted for a bogey on his 13th.
Overnight leader Rafael Cabrera-Bello was four shots back during his second round.
