PGA Tour opener finally underway after two days of high winds

KAPALUA, Hawaii -- After two days of high wind, the PGA Tour season is under way -- at least for now.

A few dozen fans in the bleachers cheered when the announcer said, "Welcome to the first round of the Tournament of Champions."

Finally.

The season opener already was off to a dubious start, and it didn't help when Rickie Fowler nearly whiffed his 3-wood. The ball never got more than shoulder-high and barely reached the fairway, leaving him 290 yards away.

Fowler also hit the opening shot Friday, only for the first round to be scrapped after he played eight holes because of 40 mph gusts that kept balls from stopping on the green.

The goal was to play 18 holes Sunday, followed by 36 holes Monday.
