MALELANE, South Africa (AP) Bruce McDonald of Zimbabwe shot a 6-under 66
Thursday to take a one-shot lead over South Africa's Ernie Els in the Dunhill
Championship.
While most of the field struggled to break par at the Leopard Creek Country
Club, McDonald mastered the unexpectedly cool, blustery conditions in the first
round after a week of temperatures that soared above 100 degrees.
McDonald, 23, who turned pro a year ago, made eight birdies and dropped just
two shots. Els had the only bogey-free round of the day.
England's Neil Cheetham, Benoit Teilleri of Italy, Frenchman Raphael Eyraud
and 22-year-old South African James Kamte - a graduate of the Ernie Els
Foundation - were tied for third on 68.
The tournament is co-sanctioned by the European and Southern Africa tours.
