• Becomes the first player to win back-to-back Open Championships since Tom Watson (1982-83).
• Becomes the 19th player in Open Championship history to win the tournament three times. Harry Vardon captured the Claret Jug a record six times, while James Braid, J.H. Taylor, Peter Thomson and Tow Watson won five each.
• Ties Walter Hagen for second on the all-time major championships list as a professional with 11. Jack Nicklaus has 18.
• Becomes all-time leading money winner at the Open with $4,215,704. The fourth tournament where his earnings top the $4-million mark.
• 72-hole total of 18-under 270 is one off career-best for a major (19-under 269, 2000 Open Championship, St. Andrews).
• Out of the 18-under total, was 14-under on the four par-5 holes with 10 birdies and two eagles.
• Tied the course record (7-under 65) set by Chris DiMarco earlier that day during round two. Later matched by Ernie Els and Sergio Garcia.
• Led the tournament in Driving Accuracy hitting 48 of 56 fairways (85.71%) and tied for second in Greens in Regulation hitting 58 of 72 greens (80.56%).
• Opened with two rounds in the 60s (67-65) for sixth time in 45 major starts and has won each time -- 2000 U.S. Open Championship, Open Championship and PGA Championship, 2002 U.S. Open and 2005 Open Championship, and 2006 Open Championship.
• Posted a career-best opening 36-hole total with his rounds of 67-65 -- 132 (-12). He had finished 36 holes at 133 three previous times – 2000 (67-66) and 2005 (66-67) Open Championships and the 2000 (66-67) PGA Championship.
• Although 12-under 132 total was two strokes off the tournament record (12-under 130, Nick Faldo, 1992, Muirfield), matched the 36-hole tournament record in relation to par. Along with Woods and Faldo, Faldo and Norman also posted 36-hole totals of 12-under 132 in 1990 at St. Andrews
• Picked up his 23rd top-10 in a major championship. He has 23 in 39 starts (55.97%) as a professional. Trails Mickelson (25) and Els (25) with total top-10s among active PGA TOUR players. Has 16 top-10s since 2000, tied with Mickelson for the most.
• Has made the cut 12 times in 12 starts at the Open Championship, his longest current streak in the majors. Four consecutive top-10s at the Open is the longest current streak.
2006 NOTES
• Successfully defends a title for the third time in four tries this season -- Buick Invitational, Ford Championship at Doral, Open Championship.
• Becomes first three-time winner of the season and collects at least three wins in a season for the eighth time in his 11-year PGA TOUR career.
• Improves season earnings to $4,263,563, the seventh straight year exceeding the $4-million mark. Moves to No. 2 on the money list.
