Diary: Weir reviews missed opportunities in final round

  •

By Mike Weir

Sunday didn't pan out quite as I'd hoped. I really feel that I hit the ball well enough to contend and even win the tournament, but just as happened throughout most of the week, I couldn't make any putts of any significant distance.

That was really the story of my week here. It wasn't that I was putting poorly, just that I couldn't convert any of those ones you need at majors, those 15 to 20 footers. Those were the ones I made when I won here in 2003, but they were rare for me this year. From five or six feet, I was deadly, but not the longer ones.

My plan Sunday was to come out and play aggressively, to try and make something happen. That's tough around Augusta National, but I really felt that I was striking the ball well enough to do it. I'd say that this week, I hit the ball about as well as I ever have. But you have to be so exacting coming into these greens and you can't always go right for the flag. You have to play smart, but I was still hoping to take chances when I was in position.

But my day was just not quite there. On the second hole, which is a good birdie opportunity, I went for the green in two and ended up in the right bunker in just a horrible lie. I couldn't really play my bunker shot at the pin so I ended up with a par there.
