Yang, just an 'average Joe' from South Korea, does unthinkable
In one of the biggest upsets in a major, South Korea's Y.E. Yang defeats Tiger Woods by three strokes to win the PGA. Yang, who scores an eagle on 14 to take the lead for good, does the unthinkable, Steve Elling says.
Believe it or not: Tiger loses lead in major on final day
The unthinkable occurs at the 91st PGA Championship when Tiger Woods fails to hang on to the lead heading into the final round. Woods tells Steve Elling, winner Y.E. Yang did exactly what the South Korean need to do to win.
Harrington's 'Tin Cup' hole dooms PGA title hopes
Padraig Harrington's dreams of winning the 91st PGA Championship take a huge flop when he scores an 8 on the par-3 eighth hole, Steve Elling says.
1970 U.S. Open
Winner: Tony Jacklin
Runner-up: Dave Hill
Margin of victory: 7 shots
Summary: Tony Jacklin became the first British player to hold the U.S. Open and British Open titles at the same time. He led from the opening round and expanded his lead each day until he had the largest margin of victory in the U.S. Open since Jim Barnes' nine-shot victory in 1921. Hazeltine had been open only eight years and was criticized, especially by runner-up Dave Hill, whom the USGA fined $150.
1991 U.S. Open
Winner: Payne Stewart
Runner-up: Scott Simpson
Margin of victory: Playoff (Stewart 75, Simpson 77)
Summary: Payne Stewart was atop the leaderboard after each of the five rounds (including the playoff), but he needed some help at the end of regulation. Simpson had a two-shot lead until bogeys at the 16th and 18th holes, and Stewart made pars to force the playoff. Stewart made only one birdie in the playoff, again rallying behind Simpson bogeys. The week was marred by the death of a spectator Thursday from lightning. Jose Maria Olazabal of Spain was the only non-American player among the top 10.
2002 PGA Championship
Winner: Rich Beem
Runner-up: Tiger Woods
Margin of victory: 1 shot
Summary: Rich Beem became a most unlikely PGA champion, a car stereo and cell phone salesman in Seattle until deciding to give golf one more try. Justin Leonard had a three-shot lead over Beem going into the final round, losing the lead in four holes. Beem seized control with a 5-wood into 6 feet for eagle on the par-5 11th and stretched the lead to as many as six shots. Woods birdied the last four holes for a 67, but Beem countered with a 35-foot birdie putt on the 16th. Beem finished with a bogey, removed the flag and swirled it around as if he were on the drill team. Woods and 52-year-old Tom Watson had the low score of the final round.
