ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. -- Maybe Bobby Frankel finally has ended talk about his Breeders' Cup drought.
Starine was the surprise winner of the $1.28 million Filly & Mare Turf on Saturday, defeating defending champion Banks Hill and giving the trainer his second Breeders' Cup victory in as many years.
The well-respected Frankel had lost his first 38 Breeders' Cup races before winning with Squirtle Squirt in last year's Sprint at Belmont Park.
Starine gave Frankel his second winner, covering the 1½-mile race for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up in 2:03.57.
Kazzia set the early pace before Starine broke away from the pack down the stretch and won by two lengths over Banks Hill, paying $28.40, $10 and $8.40.
Jockey John Velazquez became the first two-time winner on Saturday after finishing first with Storm Flag Flying in the Juvenille Fillies.
Banks Hill, who used an awesome stretch run to pull away for a six-length victory in last year's race, did not have it down the stretch Saturday and paid $5.60 and $4.40.
Islington, who had won four of six starts, showed in $4.80.
Golden Apples, the the 4-year-old filly who captured the Beverly D Stakes at Arlington in September for trainer Ben Cecil, settled for fourth.
