The Greatest American Rock and Roll Band

Posted on: December 29, 2008 3:21 pm

Firstly, I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the original blog post.  There was sufficient interest to get the ball rolling.  So here are the requirements:

1. Nominate 10 American Rock and Roll bands that you believe are worthy of being in the discussion of The Greatest American Rock and Roll Band.  I know musical taste is subjective, but please keep the following in mind when nominating a band: musicianship, innovation, influence on other musicians/pop culture, popularity, and commercial success

2.  Keep nominations to American Bands, no solo acts please.  As it pertains to this contest, an American Band will be considered any band that has a minimum of 51% American-born musicians at the time the band was formed.  In addition, the band needs to have been formed in the US.   Any nomination of a band that does not meet this requirement will be invalidated.  Nominations for bands like The E Street Band and The Heartbreakers will be accepted.

3.  Depending on the results the bands receiving the the most nominations will be placed in brackets based on the time period in which their first official release was issued.  (60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and beyond).  In the event that some bands need to be moved to a different bracket to balance them out, I will try to move bands into a bracket that contains bands similar in genre.  Bands receiving more votes will get higher seedings.

4.  The initial voting period will end on January 4th.  I will then need some time to get the brackets set up.
5.  Feel free to add commentary to your choices.
6.  Respect is important.  We won't all agree on the choices, but be respectful of other people's musical taste.  No flaming please.

Have fun and check back often.

The Greatest American Rock and Roll Band

Johnny, your right on the Temptations as a vocal group not a band,  wasn't thinking.  So I'll go with the following:

Heart - A Hard Rocking Female band with the uniqueness of a lead gutiar player being female.

The Greatest American Rock and Roll Band

Thanks for stopping by Mike.  We've got the first votes for George and The Destroyers as well as Southside Johnny.  Southside and The Jukes are a very underrated band.  Also, first mention for Bon Jovi.  Great job on your list.

The Greatest American Rock and Roll Band

Hey Patz.  Thanks for coming by.  FIrst mention for The James Gang.  Any group that gave us Joe Walsh is OK with me.  A couple of your picks don't qualify as bands (BB King and Chuck Berry).  If we opened the voting up to solo acts, it would be too difficult to get a handle on.  CSNY falls 1% short of being an american band (Neil Young from Canada and Graham Nash from England), but it's only 1%.  If you want to add a couple of picks to replace BB and Chuck, go ahead.

The Greatest American Rock and Roll Band

Here are my 10 in no particular order:

1: The Ramones - no other band since the Beach Boys, Beatles or the Smiths have had such an impact on music.

2. The James Gang - original Cleveland Rock with Joe Walsh pounding that Strat for all he was worth...

3. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Incredible 3 part harmonies with 4 very talented musicians and songwriters.

4. Boston - probably the best band of the late 70's hands down...America lost a lot when Bradley Delp tragically took his own life.

5. The Eagles - the smoothest band of the 70's and 80's with so much talent it was scary.... they really didn't hit the scene though until Joe Walsh left the James Gang and joined up with them.

6. Three Dog Night - the only group ever to have 3 separate lead singers at the same time to all hit #1. Incredibly diverse group.

7. BB King - the master of blues rock.. nuff said...

8. Chuck Berry - the father of Rock n Roll as we now know it...

9. Journey - The innovator and champion of the power ballad. Nobody then or now had the voice of Steve Perry..

10. The Doors - Not only did they have the best keyboardist ever (IMHO) but the lyricism of the songs and the imagery contained within gave new life to the music industry..

Honorable Mentions: Aerosmith, KISS, ZZ Top, and a closer one then most.. Heart - those ladys could both rock AND sing - and they still have it...saw them live 3 months ago and you could close your eyes and never know they had aged..
