The Greatest American Rock and Roll Band

Posted on: December 29, 2008 3:21 pm
Firstly, I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the original blog post.  There was sufficient interest to get the ball rolling.  So here are the requirements:

1. Nominate 10 American Rock and Roll bands that you believe are worthy of being in the discussion of The Greatest American Rock and Roll Band.  I know musical taste is subjective, but please keep the following in mind when nominating a band: musicianship, innovation, influence on other musicians/pop culture, popularity, and commercial success

2.  Keep nominations to American Bands, no solo acts please.  As it pertains to this contest, an American Band will be considered any band that has a minimum of 51% American-born musicians at the time the band was formed.  In addition, the band needs to have been formed in the US.   Any nomination of a band that does not meet this requirement will be invalidated.  Nominations for bands like The E Street Band and The Heartbreakers will be accepted.

3.  Depending on the results the bands receiving the the most nominations will be placed in brackets based on the time period in which their first official release was issued.  (60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and beyond).  In the event that some bands need to be moved to a different bracket to balance them out, I will try to move bands into a bracket that contains bands similar in genre.  Bands receiving more votes will get higher seedings.

4.  The initial voting period will end on January 4th.  I will then need some time to get the brackets set up.
5.  Feel free to add commentary to your choices.
6.  Respect is important.  We won't all agree on the choices, but be respectful of other people's musical taste.  No flaming please.

Have fun and check back often.

The Greatest American Rock and Roll Band

These are in no particular order.  I might not even like the bands, but I can respect their influences.

  1. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Can you think of Southern rock without thinking of them first.
  2. Aerosmith - It seems like they have been around forever, and they still sound great.
  3. The Eagles - They appeal to the rock fans, pop fans, and country fans.
  4. ZZ Top - When asked who was his favorite guitar player, Jimi Hendrix said Billy Gibbons.  Enough said.
  5. The Doors - Jim Morrison's lyrics were pure poetry.
  6. Nirvana - Grunge originals.
  7. Beach Boys - Influenced everyone.
  8. Grateful Dead - Probably more die hard fans than any other band.
  9. KISS - With the stage show and make up, there was no band hotter in the 70s.
  10. Metallica - Took metal mainstream.

The Greatest American Rock and Roll Band

In no particular order and not necessarily my favorites.

1. The Grateful Dead- The most popular touring band of all time.  Melded rock, blues, folk, country, jazz, and psychedelia into a new genre.  Longevity, influence, commercial success.  They had it all.

2. The Beach Boys- Tremendous influence on other musicians.  Great songs.  Tight harmonies, innovative arrangements.

3.  The Eagles-  Incredible commercial success.  Great songs and musicianship.  Very versatile.

4.  The Doors-  Relatively short career, but still a relevant band.

5.  Red Hot Chilipeppers- Great musicians.  Very innovative and influential.  They almost defy categorizing.

6.  REM- One of the early heroes of college radio.  Achieved tremendous critical and commercial success.

7.  CCR- John Fogarty and his bandmates were hit-making machines.  Still a staple on of classic rock radio.

8.  Nirvana- Tragically short career, but there is no denying their place in rock history.

9. Metallica-  The biggest and most successful of the american heavy metal bands.

10.  The Ramones-  Almost single-handedly started the punk revolution.  Influenced countless future musicians.  Never achieved huge commercial success, but their influence on rock and roll music and culture is huge.

I know I'm leaving out a ton of bands, especially more recent bands.  If there was room I'd inlcude pearl jam, foo fighters, kiss, phish, aerosmith.  Maybe I should have asked for 15 instead of 10.
