Baseball Still Has Heroes

Posted on: June 21, 2009 12:35 pm

MLB has taken a beating. The credibility of the sport is on life support. PEDs have become a punchline anytime someone wants to trash talk another team. Congressional hearings, court cases, leaked confidential drug test results. You name it and baseball has been guilty of it.
But there are still heroes in baseball!
Yes. I said it.
Heroes.
Like Albert Pujols.
But it's not what Pujols does from March-October that makes him a hero. It's what he does in February.
Albert Pujols and his wife, Deidre, returned to Albert's home, the Dominican Republic, without fanfare, without cameras, without the media's knowledge, and proceeded to load houses with mattresses. Givign beds to people who never had a bed before in their life!
"God delivered me from that place and my job now is to help others. It is my responsibility - what God has called me to do."
The Pujols family fully funds a Child Survival Program in the Dominacn Republic through Compassion International as well as sponsoring three children through Compassion.
"They come to our bateys (neighborhoods) with teams of dentists, eye doctors and medical doctors and they help everyone," says Bernard Okeke, who works for Compassion in the Dominican Republic.
Albert's wife also has a website, PujolsKitchen.com, with all proceeds to be used by the Pujols Family Foundation to help Dominican women.
But more than that, the Pujols hope to be an example for others to follow. "There are 9.6 million people in the Dominican Republic and I can't reach all of them," Albert says. "But i want to make sure I set an example for others to follow, for my kids, for my future grandkids, and the people of the Dominican Republic."
Albert Pujols is the exact kind of hero that MLB needs right now.

If Albert Pujols is ever exposed to have used PED, it'll be a sad day. As a Mets fan, Albert is the only player other than David Wright where that sort of revelation would crush me. Nice article, Tox.

Baseball Still Has Heroes

Baseball does have heroes and some of them you might not expect one that i personally know has been a hero since becoming a pro ball player. This player is Mike Hampton he started a foundation years ago and has raised and donated millions of dollars and many many hours to raise money for scholarships for kids boys and girls clubs and hundreds of other charities. He has inspired many other atheletes and celebritys to start their own foundations . It would take me hours and hours to even start listing the names of groups and individuals whos lifes he has changed. Anybody who wants to check this out go to Mike Hampton Pitching in Foundation. He is a bigger hero to so many he will never realize the difference he has made in so many lifes.

Nice work!  Pujols is exactly the kind of role model we need, and the fact that he is probably the best player in the game just draws more eyes his way.  There are some heroes in the game outside of Pujols as well.  Being in Detroit I know that Curtis Granderson does a lot of good work in the schools ain Detroit.  Education is a great thing for an athlete in Detroit to provide help in, seeing as the graduation rate in Detroit is below 25%!!!  Thank you to those players that are doing the right thing.... hopefully there are enough people that follow their lead!

Dead wrong, russman. If you've taken a look at Pujols' game, it's pretty apparent that he's hasn't used steroids in this game. His skill is natural--no overly large biceps and no massive temper tantrums. There might be fewer heroes in baseball than in any other sport, but Pujols is one of them.
