Browns Raiders--The Good the Bad the Ugly.

The Good

A winning streak.  3 games in a row!

Jerome Harrison's running.  I constantly hear insane remarks from Cleveland fans.  "Don't let the coach win, if he does it means we can't fire him."  "How could you bench Harrison?"

First, Harrison was injured for most of this year.  He had a large knee brace to anyone paying attention.  He is just now getting healthy.  Aside from that, there is more being an NFL running back that just running the ball.  You HAVE to know how to do it all in this league.  If you don't want to learn it you don't play.  Put in the extra time.

Matt Roth.  Who is this guy?  Where did he come from?  Can we keep him?
Here is another point people slam Mangini on.  Why isn't Venuke starting?  We drafted him high, therefore he starts.  Draft status gets you your first contract, after you step on the field it doesn't mean squat.

NOBODY SHOULD BE GIVEN A STARTING SPOT OR PLAYING TIME!  You earn it.  In his case he hasn't yet.  Its way too early to call him a bust he is just a rookie.

Aggressive play calling.  We have had it all season.  It was one thing I couldn't stomach from Crenell, rush 3 all game and wonder why they stomp you.  We blitzed all game.  We went for a fake punt as a dagger to the heart.  It didn't work, but I'll take the aggressiveness.  That is how you beat a team like the Steelers

The Bad

Passing yardage.  The pass was effective.  DA was 1 completion from 50%.  He hit Mass on a TD during a two minute drill.  No INT's.  We really didn't need a good passing game to end this one.  I still would prefer to see more passing yards than rushing yards.

The Ugly

The first part of the season.  Where was this?  Answer- it takes time to get guys into a system.  It takes time for players to learn what they are doing with a coach.  It takes time for locker room leaders to develop.  It takes time for a team to buy into it.  They are playing less than stellar opponents but they are light years ahead of where they were at the start of the year.

I don't even think SA can call for a firing at this point.

.   Who is this guy?  Where did he come from?  Can we keep him? I took time to study Roth on film and he's every bit as good as advertised.

It also got me thinking as to what Mangini saw in David Veikune. Roth was a defensive lineman at Iowa and made the conversion into a 3-4 outside linebacker. Same with Kamerion Wimbley. These guys had experience putting their hands on the ground and rushing the passer.

I'm not sure if you noticed, but that's exactly how Mangini and Rob Ryan have been using them. The Browns have a 3-3-5 nickle package which they go to quite often. Instead of three down lineman, the Browns have Kamerion Wimbley and Matt Roth line up at ends with Corey Williams in the middle. Trusnik (also a former down lineman) and Bowens (ditto) played the stand up outside backers with Kaluka Maiava in the middle.

From a schematic standpoint, this creates versatility. With four outside linebackers with experience as D-lineman on the field together, any combination (not just the three down lineman) can drop into coverage or rush the quarterback. David Bowens' interception on the second play of the game came out of this formation. Frye thought Bowens would rush, but he dropped off and read the slat to McFadden.

Back to Veikune, Mangini likely saw the same thing in him. Those pass rush moves he's developed in college would complement his game as a linebacker, giving the Browns added versatility in their defensive schemes.

Mangini was drafting to fit the scheme he's already perfected in New York.

Browns Raiders--The Good the Bad the Ugly.

I don't even think SA can call for a firing at this point. No and I don't think so either, but I think Holmgren will...  I have thoroughly enjoyed these last three games, and that is just how far our expectations have fallen.  The Browns defense gave up over 330 yards passing to CHARLIE FRYE!

In his press conference he referred to them as "those guys"...

And having to evaluate "based on the whole body of work", not one or three games...

Odds are Mang*** is toast.  At least it is interesting seeing what a human being skewered and twisted on a stick looks like...

Holmgren said he would not make the same mistake he made before, and that was waiting to make changes, so I look for a clean sweep of the coaches and Holmgren will bring his guys in.

Mang*** has already been rumoured for the job in Buffalo...  Maybe we can trade him to the Bills for a conditional 3rd round draft pick and a bag of donuts...

The 3rd round pick becomes a 2nd rounder if Mang*** survives the 1st year...
