MOST OVERRATED OF ALL TIME: The First 32

Posted on: August 10, 2009 11:02 am

THE FIRST 32

Let's begin the tournament

We'll start with half the field of 64; the first 32 nominees represent those with the most votes from Major League Baseball and the National Football league.

You know how this works - copy & paste to respond, and it would be easiest to simply deleted the name/picture of the player you want to vote out. Without trying to sound too much like Jeff probst, please remember that you are voting for the person you think is most overrated.

Keep in mind that the players listed here are not necessarily my personal choices - and some would not even appear on this list if I had my way. I included all of the players submitted by those who responded to my post, my nominees and filled out the remaining gaps by pulling from other polls (such as the Sports Illustrated article & Bleacher Report blog).

The one exception to this is Barry Sanders - with all due respect to Jalopy (who along with others understandably criticized my choice of Lance Armstrong - I have no problem with any of those viewpoints), I decided to throw my own choice of Plaxico Burress in the mix. And I can't bring myself to include a guy who's 3rd all-time in rushing yards who played on a clearly inferior team compared to Emmitt Smith and Walter Payton, and certainly would have far surpassed both of them had he played the same number of seasons as they had.

I'll post the other half of the field once we get through the first 32; I'll try to keep it moving along as fast as possible.
Thanks to everyone who participated in building this tournament.

The players on the left won almost every match-up. Was it designed that way?

MOST OVERRATED OF ALL TIME: The First 32

RICH KOTITE CONFERENCE

 #1 Joe Namath - QB, NY Jets   Pooooor pitiful knee. Poor, poor pitiful me. All these men won't let me be. Poor poor pitiful knee!

 #2 Ryan Leaf, QB Chargers  Iconic legend as an overrated quarterback

 #3 Plaxico Burress, WR NFL  Could have been good, but his own behavior shot him in the foot.

 #4 Vince Young - QB, Titans  The only thing I like about Tennessee are Dolly Parton and the mountains.  No, guys, not those mountains, the Smokies!!

 #5 Terrell Owens - WR, Bills   Toughest choice yet, but Favre at least had some dignity before Alzheimer's set in...

 #6 Michael Vick - QB, NFL    Has a great future as a can of Alpo...

 #10 Todd Marinovich - QB, Raiders  Just overhyped and overrated.

 #8 Brian Bosworth - LB, Seahawks   What a career.  Three and out!

BOBBY VALENTINE CONFERENCE

 #16 Alex Rodriguez - SS, Yankees  A-Roid versus Iron Cal?  Easiest one yet.

 #15 Derek Jeter - SS, Yankees  At least there can be soap operas to continue his career later on.

 #14 Bo Jackson, RB (NFL) / OF (MLB)  Canseco didn't enter the game with the same hype as Bo.  Bo managed to screw up his career without the mouth or the roids.  What a disappointment!

 #4 Bobby Murcer - OF, Yankees  The "next Mickey Mantle" was really the next Mickey Mouse.  Rose was never boring and got as high on ego as some did on drugs.

 #5 Barry Zito - SP, Giants   With a name like a character from a crime drama, you expected greatness.  It's a crime alright.

 #6 Darryl Strawberry - OF, Mets/Yankees  Sniff! Sniff! He should be crying about what could have been.

 #10 Mark McGwire - 1B, A's/Cardinals  The great white dope destroyed all hope of clean living and greatness in MLB.

 #8 Sammy Sosa - OF, Cubs/Rangers  We knew the truth about Bonds when he went from a fast little guy to the Incredible Hulk.  Like McGwire, we tried, we wanted to believe there was something real with Sosa.  Instead of McGwire and Sosa being K and J from Men in Black, they were Vincent and Jules from Pulp Fiction.  Way overrated, both of them.

MOST OVERRATED OF ALL TIME: The First 32

Okay, here we go. I do have one thing to say before I make my picks. To me being "overrated" means that your reputation or perceived worth remains much higher than it deserves to be. So if I don't pick a Ryan Leaf for instance it doesn't mean I think he was a better player than Terry Bradshaw. It means I think Bradshaw gets credit for being a better player than he actually was and that Leaf doesn't get much cred from anyone these days so it is hard for him to be "overrated."

RICH KOTITE CONFERENCE

 #1 Joe Namath - QB, NY Jets     &
nbsp;

Without the guaranrtee, nobody remembers Joe Namath was an NFL quarterback.

    #15 Terry Bradshaw - QB, Steelers
There's a difference between being a bust and being overrated.

    #14 Deon Sanders - NFL & MLB
Greatest "cover corner" of all time? What does that mean anyways? That means he only did half of what a true cornerback is supposed to do.

  #13 Steve Young - QB, 49ers
Vince hasn't been around long enough to have been more overrated than a Hall of Famer who rode others' coattails to greatness.

 #5 Terrell Owens - WR, Bills

;     &nbs
p;
Oh wow. Can't vote for a tie?

 #6 Michael Vick - QB, NFL     &n
bsp;     &
nbsp;
Again, Phillips was a bust. Nobody looks at him today and tries to argue for him in terms of greatness. Unlike Vick, whom some people still thick is a great quarterback.

 #7 Doug Flutie - QB, USFL/NFL/CFL
;
Another case of overrated vs bust.

 #8 Brian Bosworth - LB, Seahawks    &nb
sp;     &n
bsp;
Two busts, I'll vote Bosworth because at least Mandarich never wrote a book and then busted.

BOBBY VALENTINE CONFERENCE

  #16 Alex Rodriguez - SS, Yankees
ARod. The highest paid player in baseball while in Texas for three years and couldn't even lift his team out of last place.

 #2 Ozzie Smith - SS, Cardinals    &n
bsp;     &
nbsp;

I hate that Ozzie is on the list but Jeter was the catalyst for too many World Series wins for him to be there.

 #3 Jose Canseco - OF, MLB    &n
bsp;     &
nbsp;

Legend in his own mind.
  #13 Pete Rose - multiple positions, Reds
But not the most overrated of all time by a long shot.

 #5 Barry Zito - SP, Giants
;     &nbs
p;
Homer pick.
 #6 Darryl Strawberry - OF, Mets/Yankees
Closer to a what could have been than an overrated player.
  #10 Mark McGwire - 1B, A's/Cardinals
His "I'm in awe of myself" speech he gave about his 70 homerun season sure sounds phony today, doesn't iy?

 #8 Sammy Sosa - OF, Cubs/Rangers
;
Sammy beats Barry for most overrated simply because Barry always was mashing the balls. Sammy only had a few good years on the juice.

MOST OVERRATED OF ALL TIME: The First 32

OK Jeff, err BigBlu, here is my official ballot

  #15 Terry Bradshaw - QB, Steelers

   #14 Deon Sanders - NFL & MLB I think I nominated this guy too.

 #4 Vince Young - QB, Titans

 #5 Terrell Owens - WR, Bills   At least Brett has won a championship.

 #6 Michael Vick - QB, NFL

 #7 Doug Flutie - QB, USFL/NFL/CFL

 #8 Brian Bosworth - LB, Seahawks

BOBBY VALENTINE CONFERENCE

 #1 Cal Ripken Jr. - SS, Orioles    &nbs
p;    Of course you are going to break records when you play for 100 years.

 #2 Ozzie Smith - SS, Cardinals    &n
bsp;
 #14 Bo Jackson, RB (NFL) / OF (MLB)

 #4 Bobby Murcer - OF, Yankees

 #6 Darryl Strawberry - OF, Mets/Yankees
