I am wondering if anyone else is interested in the upcoming World Baseball Classic. I think its a great idea, and like the fact there are real games on starting March 5th.

World Baseball Classic

i have to admit that i was very excited about the event,

said excitement lasted until I saw Abreu lumber around the bases at 20 lbs. over his normal playing weight - from then on, the tournament gave the impression of spring training with different uni's .

One exception was the most recent Japan - S. Korea tilt, which was very intensely played and managed. Seeing S. Korea plant their flag on the pitcher's mound after their victory was a great image I won't easily forget.

Maybe an event once every four years will add prestige , baseball fans would kick and scream (me included) if the regular season were interrupted -- but i would fear that is the only possible solution to give this event the immediacy it now lacks.

No great sporting event was ever launched without controversy.... we'll see.....

Can, i've been to the WBC on Toronto, it was great to see meaningful games in march. I agree with most of the people that are opposed to the WBC, that yes the timimg isn't the greatest. But i figure the earlier you get to face good pitching and be in meaningful situations the further ahead you would be in being prepared for the upcoming season. There's much more to this tournament then the games itself and thats the enviorment, the people that love baseball are at these events, and really care of the outcome. I had a great time, and would recommend to any baseball fan, if given the opportunity, get out to one of these games...bto...enjoy!

i made some comments on my blog.

World Baseball Classic

If anyone caught the Netherlands vs Dominica Republic, they saw a good game. Who would of thaught the Netherlands would hold the D.R. to two runs or that the Dominica Republic only scored two runs.
As a Dodger fan I was impressed by the catcher of the Netherlands, Jansen, who's a A/AA player. Something for me to watch the next couple years of his progress.

World Baseball Classic

I've liked this event since it first came into being. The Americans, unfortunately, treated it like it was an exhibition or spring training the first time around. The other teams around the world took it with much more nationalism and looked at it as a world championship type test. So far, it seems like this time around the American team is going to take a more serious and unified approach into this tournament. I think we have to credit the manager Davey Johnson for that. Over the summer, he coached a group of minor leaguers in the Summer Olympics. I think he wants to prove a point to the rest of the world that the US is still where the best baseball is played. We'll just have to wait and see.

I couldn't agree more!  First of all Major League Baseball doesn't need to drum up or bring any awareness to their product.  Regardless of the current economic crisis MLB is doing rather well, just ask Mr. Selig.  I love baseball, but think the WBC definitely takes away from teams and their players preperation for the upcoming MLB season.  If I were an owner I would have a major problem letting a player under a guaranteed  contract playing for another team.  I understand the presitge of one representing one's country, but these players have obligations to thier teams and the teams fan base.  Most athletes stress routine for their greatest overall success, starting spring training, participating in the WBC, returning to spring training, and then starting the season seems like anything but.

World Baseball Classic

I am not a big fan of the World Baseball Classic.  It is a great concept, but it conflicts with spring training and can over extend major league players before the season starts.  Many of the participants are under contract for major league teams and their number one responsibility is staying healthy for the regular season.  At this point in spring training most players are playing at 3/4 speed.  The WBC is a competition that demands full speed.  This extends an already long major league season for players that should be focused on winning the world series, not a created tournament.

World Baseball Classic

I feel that it helps to promote the game of baseball around the world. Anyting that can do that is okay in my book.

Go Reds. Go Red Sox. Go Braves. Go Orioles.
