Breaking down the rankings:

Finally some stability at the top! For the first time in a long time there is no change at #1. Meanwhile four of the top five teams remain the same from last week. Leading off their second week at #1 is Connecticut followed by Oklahoma who squeaked out a win at home over Colorado.  North Carolina is next and is trying to figure out if they can still be the team everyone thought they would be despite suspension and injuries. Pittsburgh moves up to #4 filling the spot vacated by Duke and Louisville rounds out the top 5.

Duke comes in at #6. The Blue Devils narrowly avoided back to back losses with an overtime win over Miami. Michigan State makes a big jump this week up 6 spots to #7. Wake Forest is next holding the same as last week. Another big jumper, Memphis, climbs to #9 and is followed by Marquette who is coming off an unexpected loss vs. South Florida.

Clemson comes in down one spot at #11 followed by the Bruins of UCLA who dismantled Notre Dame over the weekend. Villanova climbs 6 spots to #13 followed by Xavier who is coming off their third loss of the season. Kansas makes a nice climb up to #15 as the Jayhawks go into a Big Monday showdown at Mizzou tonight.

Butler falls 5 spots to #16 after their second loss. The Bulldogs are followed by Illinois and Missouri. The Tigers are making noise in the Big 12 and still have an outside shot at the conference crown with remaining games against KU and OU. Syracuse comes in down 2 spots from last week and is followed by Purdue. The Boilermakers don’t seem to be nearly the same team without Hummel who is suffering through a back injury.

Arizona State jumps back into the poll this week at #21. The Sun Devils are followed by two other newcomers this week, Florida State and Ohio State. Utah State holds strong at #24 with still only one loss on the season. Rounding out the poll this week is Gonzaga who is coming off a pounding at the hands of Memphis.

The People's Poll: Week 13

My poll would look like this:

Grizzly Blair's weekly Top 25:

#1 UConn (22-1)  As much as I hate to admit it.  The Huskies still have to play Marquette, Syracuse, and Pitt (twice).

#2 UNC (21-2)  It's been a while since their last loss but BC at home still hurts.

#2 Pitt (21-2) Just because they had more recent losses doesn't mean they should automatically be behind UNC.  Two acceptable losses: At Louisville and at Villanova (a complete ref-job in the last college basketball game to be played at the historic Spectrum).  Neither are as bad as a BC loss at home but the losses came later in the season than UNC's, that would be the counterpoint.

#4 Oklahoma (23-1) Losing 1 game with their schedule is less impressive than losing 2 with UNC and Pitt's schedules.  Arkansas loss looks worse and worse with each passing week.  Still looks to be a top notch team and Blake Griffin is excellent.  How many teams in the top 25 has Oklahoma played to earn a coveted #1 seed?  I'n thinking maybe Texas and Baylor... I really don't think with the way Texas has played as of late they should be in the Top 25. (Neither team is in mine)

#5 Louisville (18-4) More losses than Duke, Wake Forest, and Marquette but have played much better than all 3 lately.  No shame in losing to UConn no matter where the game is played and lately Duke and Wake Forest have played well below expectations.

#6 Duke (20-3) Lost like 3 of last 5 and got crushed in 1 of those contests.

#7 Wake Foest (18-3) Would be ahead of Duke based on the strength of the head-to-head victory over them but the loss at Georgia Tech when they were winless in conference play puts them behind the Blue Devils.

#8 Marquette (20-3)  They were on fire but losing at South Florida wrecked a lot of that momentum.

#9 Memphis (20-3)  Played really well, thrashing Gonzaga on the road but they are 0-2 versus the Big East.  A Big East team with the same record or 1 more loss should be placed ahead of the Tigers.  Are you guys sure you still want to be a member of the Big East!?

#10 Clemson (19-3)  Lost to Wake, at UNC, and blew a big lead at home (19 pts or something) against a hot seminoles squad.  Still though, they crushed Duke and that's got to count for something

#11 Villanova (19-4)  Have played really well lately and only lost to Texas at home (when they were playing much better basketball), Louisville at home, at Marquette and at UConn.  All good losses and beat Pitt (in a ref-job of a game).

#12 Michigan St. (19-4) Losses at home to PSU and Northwestern put them behind some teams that they may actually be better than, even though they had injuries while they endured a few of these losses.

#13 UCLA (19-4)  The Pac-10 is down this year.  Lost to Michigan, Texas, Arizona St at home in OT.  I can't remember the other loss right now maybe at Washington but it doesn't really matter the PAC-10 is down right now and they are up this far on name as much as for accomplishment.  They have played well lately.

#14 Xavier (20-3)  Remember this team beat Memphis at a neutral court in a tournament title game this year.  But they got steamrolled by Duke in mid Dec. and just lost at Duquesne.  This shouldn't really happen to a potential top 10 team but occassionally it does.

#15 Butler (21-2)  the record speaks for itself.

#16 Kansas (19-4) Playing well at this point in time and are making up ground due in part to the fact that the Big XII lacks top 15 teams outside of powerful Oklahoma.

#17 Missouri (20-4)  Refer to the write-up on Kansas, although I do think that the Tigers can play.  Nice running style.

#18 Utah St. (23-1) They've almost won every game they've participated in.  Similar to the reasoning behind Butler's ranking and they can't be dropped until they drop a game.

#19 Arizona St. (18-5)  Here's were the rankings are very debatable.  Won at UCLA but dropped a few games over the last few weeks.  I like this team this season.  Could use more production out of their front court players.

#20 Florida St. (18-5)  Early losses at Northwestern and at home to Pitt.  Lost on a last second shot to UNC by Lawson and showed a lot of grit on the road down by 19 at Clemson coming back to win that outing.

#21 Gonzaga (17-5)  Haven't played that well lately, had a match-up problem at home against Memphis, but they still have talent and some nice wins this season.  I actually think they are lucky Patrick Mills got hurt or they may not be in this poll right now.  They had better get it together if they want a respectable seed for the NCAA's.

#22 Syracuse (18-6)  They must realize that they are a good team (as witnessed by wins over Kansas and Florida in Big XII country and on the road at Memphis).  When Calipari tried to justify his early season losses on his coaching (not putting Evans at the Point), I simply laughed.  I guess everyone tries to politic for a good seed during the tournament and I can't blame John for trying to do so.  Back to the Orange they have talent but are losing confidence during the Big East gauntlet.  Jim better corral his troops before they lose too much of it.

#23 Illinois (19-5)  Playing relatively well in the suprising Big 10 conference.  They only lost the ACC/Big 10 challenge by 6-5, I think.  They just need to keep winning the games they are supposed to be winning and they'll be fine.

#24 Washington (17-6)  They are starting to get their act together at the right time of the year after not playing so well early in the season.  I think this is a sleeper team for the Tourney and they have loads of talent Thomas at the point, some nice shooters, Pondexter is a nice-sized athletic wing, and Brockman is the best post player in the Far West.  They just need to continue developing some consistent play.

#25 Dayton (21-3)  Crushed Marquette early in the year at a neutral site by like 17.  They only have 3 losses and are highly underrated.  Chris Wright is a beast on the wing.  Most underrated team in the country this season.

The People's Poll: Week 13

This is the best poll out there... it is hard for me to give a Kansas fan credit.  I don't find to much in it that I disagree with other then Utah State who hasn't beaten anyone (but they do only have one loss to a decent BYU).

I hope Mizzou can show they deserve the ranking on this poll and finally rekindle the rivalry with Kansas by being competitive.
