Steve Francis traded to Memphis (UPDATE 2)

Steve Francis will wind up with the Grizzlies, after all. Not the Vancouver Grizzlies -- the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Houston Rockets announced Wednesday they've dealt the injured former superstar to Memphis along with a 2009 second-round pick and cash. The Rockets get a conditional 2011 second-round pick.

The second-round pick going to Memphis was originally acquired from the Grizzlies in a 2008 draft night deal. Francis has not played for the Rockets this season after having surgery on a torn quadriceps tendon back in February. You may recall how Francis balked at playing for the Vancouver Grizzlies after he was selected with the No. 2 overall pick in 1999. His rights were traded to Houston in a three-team, 11-player deal.

More later as details become available.

UPDATED: Francis is in the final year of a two-year deal that pays him $2.6 million this season. That money would come off Memphis' books in July. For Francis, he gets a chance to get some minutes, test his knee, and decide if he can continue his career. For the Grizzlies, the deal was mostly about reaquiring their 2009 second-round pick, which went to Houston as part of separate deals in which Houston got Donte Green and Joey Dorsey

UPDATED Dec. 25, 12:23 p.m.: The cash involved in the deal is a nice holiday gift for Memphis. Houston pays Francis' contract plus a little more, a person familiar with the deal said. The maximum cash allowed to change hands in a trade is $3 million, so it sounds like Memphis got a little less than that.

Steve Francis traded to Memphis (UPDATE 2)

Francis has faded in a punchline. I see a similiar future for Marbury if he keeps down the same road.

Steve Francis traded to Memphis (UPDATE 2)

Memphis got a steel here. Stevie Franchise is a spoiled brat, but a spolied brat that can play (if healthy). He should be and should be a good mentor to Micheal Conley in Memphis. As players get older, they realize to keep playing you need to help in areas of mentoring. aka, Lyndsey Hunter (CHI).

Steve Francis traded to Memphis (UPDATE 2)

I wonder if he's got anything left in the tank? His career numbers are of 2nd-3rd round fantasy calibur when on the court...However stashing a guy like him over CJ Miles in a keeper league is kind of hard to do...Good luck Memphis fans.

Did he sob in front of the cameras this time?

You know, the way that he did on Draft nite back in '99 when he got taken with the second pick by the then-Vancouver Grizzlies?

Thought he should've been picked first overall in front of Elton Brand, too.  Yeah, well --which one will retire from the game closer to the Hall of Fame, hah?

I remember well the abuse I took over in the msnbc boards nigh ten years ago when I called his "co"-Rookie of the Year award shared with Brand an unmitigated joke.  They accused me of, among other things, being a bitter Bulls fan who doesn't know much about roundball.

Yeah, well.  Guess the folks who got their basketball knowledge from Inside Stuff turned out to be wrong and I was right, and the line to apologize ought to be a long one.

But enough about me.  How many playoff games has the great Stevie Franchise been on the winning side of over the course of his nine completed seasons in the league?  I count one as an active player not on injured reserve.

Wow.  And he calls himself "Franchise" with a straight face.  At least he'll always have that co-RotY award to hang his hat on.

Steve Francis traded to Memphis (UPDATE 2)

Probably because the Rockets dont think they will need next years 2nd round to badly so they basically get it moved back a little so they will have it maybe when they need it instead of filling up the roster with a player they dont need right now.
