Sixers better off without Brand anyway

I'm saddened to hear the news that Elton Brand is having season-ending shoulder surgery.

But if I'm Ed Stefanski and Tony DiLeo, I'd be relieved.

The Sixers never adapted to playing with a true post scorer, and Elton clearly never fully recovered from last season's Achilles injury.

Better to pack it in, play the rest of the season with the athletic, up-and-down style that has been successful, and take a long, hard look at how Brand fits in over the summer.

I mean no disrespect to Elton. He's a hell of a guy and a great, great player. But this wasn't working out, and he'll be better off getting healthy and regrouping for next season.

So will the Sixers.

Sixers better off without Brand anyway

The Sixers could have been a better team this year, and I agree it is dissapointing that they didnt adapt to such a great player.

Maybe next year.

Sixers better off without Brand anyway

It's pretty obvious to me that you really don't know much about basketball...or at least the Sixers!!  This is almost the same team that in the second half of last season had one of the best records in the East, made the playoffs and played a good Detroit team pretty competitively in Round 1.  They are young, athletic and like to push the ball up and down the court.  With a post player like Elton Brand, you lose some of your tempo game...because he likes to establish himself in the paint.  This turns you into more of a half court team!!  Now the task for the Sixers next season is to make this work WITH Brand in the lineup.  He is no good to this team injured so let him have the surgery, rehab and get healthy for next year.  The current style the Sixers play should be enough to get them in the playoffs but getting out of the first round will be difficult with the Top 4 teams looking like Boston, Cleveland, Orlando and Detroit!

Sixers better off without Brand anyway

I'm a big time Sixer fan and they need Brand in the long run to get to a championship level team.  They have not adjusted to having a half court player on their team.  Brand is really not even a true post player, but he is better than anyone on their current roster in the paint.  Brand may have to adjust to the Sixers style of play because Philly has only lost 5 of their last 16 games and 4 were at the buzzer.  So their up tempo style works but it struggles in the playoffs, altough they had the Pistons on the ropes last year.  They must continue the way they are and Brand must adjust his game to what the Sixers have been doing to be successful.  When he catches up-Look Out!  Bring back Iverson next year and we'll be OK!!

This squad of losers is a 11-8 without Brand......  And 13-16 with him........... And i guarantee thay make the playoffs if they don't trade Andre Miller......... But with that said i still think they need Brand to ever have a chance to go any where in the playoffs....... You need a good half court game in the playoffs to win.......

for the style of a lot of the players it may seem that way. but then that leaves the excuse for ai(version2) and some others that they don't need to work on their 1/2 court game or improve their outside shooting. sure, it was wrong to totally slow things up. kinda like the style changed in '82 with Moses but that group had Doc, cheeks, Jones, & especially Toney who could light it up. their downside was 2 much individual creation with the ball and not enough movement - pic&rolls, backdoors and that is something the current Sixers needed. the late '90's-2000 kings didn't have great shooters in the 1/2 court (webber, william, williamson, abdul-wahad later christie) but adelmann brought carill and they learned the princeton style movement and the offense was more fluid. the sixersneeded that frrom years ago when they acquired webber to especailly now. brand can pass and obviously with their athleticism, you want ai & young and others attacking the rim

The 2008-09 Sixers are in the same position re Elton Brand that the 2007-08 Wizards were in re Gilbert Arenas. They will make the playoffs with their present configuration but after that it is a dead end. Andre Miller is no kid and Andre Iguodala, like Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler, is a fine player who lacks the complete set of tools needed to dominate a game. Given the size and length of Brand's contract, he (also like Arenas) is essentially unmovable. The Sixers need to find a coach who can structure a style of play (in this case, half court, low post) that utilizes Brand's strengths and fits the game pace that is best suited to an aging, pass-first point guard like Miller. With the mid first-round choice they will get this year, they should aim for a point guard who can eventualy replace Miller (e.g. Ty Lawson).

Sixers better off without Brand anyway

I hate to say this but for the present moment the sixers are better off without Brand. however in the long run they need him. Hopefully he can get healthy for this summer so he can work out with the 76ers over the summer. Anyone saying he can't run hasn't seen many of his games. Brand is an athlete, he was slowed all season and I don't think he ever fully recovered from last season. Hopefully next year we can get the real deal...Oh and maybe a 3-point shooter.

Wow.  People are pretty quick to judge how Brand is fitting in.  Seems to me he hasn't even had much time to proactice and play with the team.  All the comments that he "can't run" miss what he accomplished on the west coast - he thrived when running and thrived even more when posting up.  The Sixers three REAL problems are

1) Not enough time to have jelled

2) Weak 3 point shooting after Brand kicks the ball out of the double-team (Iggy, who I like, is a slasher, not a pure shooter)

3) No scrappy, hard-nosed defender who can help with #2 a bit (ala James Posey, Bruce Bowen, Shane Battier, Trevor Ariza, Ronnie Brewer, etc.)

One free agent and some healthy time on the court together can fix everything above and the Sixers could be tough for the first time since they went to the Finals against LA.
