Marbury gets start for Celtics (UPDATE)

BOSTON -- Stephon Marbury got his first start Sunday since joining the Celtics, replacing injured poinit guard Rajon Rondo against the Orlando Magic.

It's Marbury's first start since Jan. 11, 2008, when he had 13 points and eight assists for the Knicks in a home loss to Toronto. After that game, Marbury elected to have foot surgery and missed the rest of the season. The rest is history -- the benching in the season opener by Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni, the banishment from the team over refusing to play, the lengthy contract dispute, and finally a buyout that freed him up to sign with the Celtics.

Welcome to the Gah-den. Happy to be here to bring you the Brooklyn vs. Queens point guard matchup between Marbury and Rafer Alston.

Brooklyn we go hahd, we go hahd ...

UPDATE: Marbury played about the way you'd expect after such a long gap between starts. He was 2-for-5 with four points and no assists. His timing and conditioning still have a long way to go, and a problem he had even when he was healthy and in good graces with the Knicks was evident again: Steph can still get to the basket whenever he wants to, but he can't finish the way he used to. Hey, it comes with age and not playing competitive basketball for almost 14 months.

Marbury was unable to play at the tempo the Celtics needed to keep the Magic off balance, which is why Doc Rivers went with Eddie House at the point for most of the third and all but the final 14 seconds of the fourth. With Marbury on the bench, Boston climbed back from a 22-point third-quarter deficit and got it down to single digits before falling to Orlando, 86-79.

I wished him luck after his postgame interview, and he thanked me and asked how I was. No hug. No hard feelings. No feelings at all, really. He plays ball and I write about it. One thing I'll say about him is that he almost always understands that.

Marbury gets start for Celtics (UPDATE)

Playmaker your arguments are not even close to being justified in any way shape or form.  I read Berger's blog all the time, and by no way is he ever racist.  You call the media conservative?  Look at Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers.  He was sniffing crack and getting inked up a few years ago, then he comes back and is loved by the media.  I am no politician, but I'd say the media was pretty generous about their views on him.  You know why?  Because he performed.  Not because he was white, but because he was putting up unreal statistics.  If Iverson or Marbury were to be playing well, and putting up good numbers, it would be a different story.  Perform and you are loved.  Play below your level, and the media will be on you.

Anyway, I do like Marbury though, and do hope he can make something of his career. But let's be honest, Marbury is not even close to Steve Nash's level.  Sure he has no finals appearences, but Nash has got a couple MVP's awards, and is one of the best point guards in the league.  Maybe he isn't a great defender, but I don't see Marbury as one of the elite defenders in the league.  Marbury has some work to do, but if he can get in shape and learn the system, maybe he becomes the turn around story of the year.

I see that you got a lot of passion, but this is in no way a race issue.  In fact, you are probably being racist in this situation assuming that Mr. Berger is.  Keep doing your thing Mr. Berger.

Marbury gets start for Celtics

It's no surprise that the Celtics lost with Marbury in the starting lineup. Luckily the Celtics have as strong a locker room as there is in the NBA!

Hopefully Marbury can gives guys a little breather, then run to what should be a little crack in the wall for his locker.

I usually don't care for the Celtics. But I am rooting for them inspite of Marbury's presence.

Marbury gets start for Celtics

Oh yes, he must be racist because he doesn't like a certian player.  That is the dumbest thing written on here in a while. Obviously you don't understand what the word racist means. If he was racist, he'd bash every black player.  It just so happens Marbury is black.  Marbury is a cancer to whatever team he belongs.  Crying about his situation with the knicks and now magically everything is all right when going to the Celtics.  Back to sucking on Kevin Garnett's jock.  Marbury is a joke.  You must be the last to realize this "playmaker".  Oly one talking about race is you, must be a sad little world you live in.

Marbury gets start for Celtics

I can't believe that they would mess with the best chemistry in the league by signing Marbury; let alone starting him today. Unbelievable!! Are they depending on Garnett to manage him?
