Will someone smash the guitar over LeBron's head?

Posted on: April 12, 2009 6:23 pm

It's easy to draw kneejerk conclusions from a blowout over the defending champs in the final week of the regular season. I'm not going to do that. I will give the Cavaliers this: The path to the Larry O'Brien Trophy goes through Cleveland this year, plain and simple.

It's hard to say whether the Celtics are flat-out playing second fiddle to the Cavs now, especially since everyone knows the Celts aren't at full strength and probably won't be until the sometime in their second-round playoff series. Kevin Garnett is expected to chip the rust off in Boston's regular season finale against the Washington Wizards. Even after that, it'll take some time for the Celtics to find the rhythm and cohesiveness that led them to banner No. 17 last June.

I understand there was a reason the Cavs were dancing, strumming air guitars, and mugging for the ABC cameras during a 107-76 evisceration of the Celtics on Sunday afternoon. Not only were they proclaiming their superiority in the East, the Cavs also were celebrating the stranglehold they have on homecourt advantage in the NBA Finals if and when they get there. With their 65th victory of the season, Cleveland would have to lose both of its remaining games and the Lakers would have to win both of theirs for the Cavs to lose their grasp on home court. (If somehow all that happened, the Lakers would get the nod because they were 2-0 against Cleveland this season.) The way the Cavs play at home -- 39-1, for goodness sake -- it would be hard to imagine a more confident team going into a Game 7 against the Lakers in mid-June.

But ... and this is a significant caveat ... the Cavs are better than this. How can you be better than 39-1 at home? For one, you can show class -- not crass. You can show sportsmanship -- not gamesmanship. You can act like you're auditioning for a championship, not "Dancing With The Stars." I want to get LeBron, Mo Williams, and Delonte West in front of Bruno Tonioli for five minutes. They'd never pull stunts like this again.

The Cavs sure looked better than the Celtics on Sunday. A lot better. You can argue that LeBron can do whatever he wants on the bench during the fourth quarter of a blowout he'd so expertly orchestrated. He is the MVP in the league, hands down. His drive to the basket for a 3-point play -- dragging two defenders with him and getting fouled three times -- was awe-inspiring. So was the way he chased down a play from 60 feet and swatted Ray Allen's layup attempt away from the rim. He is an awesome talent at both ends of the floor, and there may very well be no one who can stop him and no team that can stop the Cavs.

But you don't show up the defending champs the way the Cavs did Sunday. You just don't. You celebrate when the season is over and when you are holding the gold-plated trophy on your home court. Not on the last Sunday of the regular season, in the midst of an eminently meaningless regular season game.

The Celtics will remember this. As to whether they're good enough to do anything about it, only time will tell. But I don't like it one bit. One of these days, somebody is going to take that air guitar and smash it over LeBron's head.

Wow what a coincidence all the  low level cleveland fabs are talking like retards while the veteran guys actually have constructive comments lol.

I never said ray allens groin hit was classy i never even mentioned it. BTW i dont feel bad for varejo because i would love to punch hat little bitch in the face but ray shouldnt have elbowed him there even if verajo had just thrown him to the ground. Also someone brought up injuries earlier. Thats a joke right? kg alone is as valuable as West, Wallace and Zo lol nevermind the fact that pobig baby and rondo missing time too. Oh and for the point about orlando making a deal to get another og... good for them the celts got marbury whos play has become much better recently so id be worried about a healthy celtics team with vebgeance on their minds. Also lets not forget th cavs havent won in boston ever since lebron so all it takes is one win in the Q and the celtics have the edge lol. Should be interesting.

As for KG yelling at calerdon calderon's a punk and was getting in KG face all game. Thats intensity not showboating lol thats putting someone in their place not showboating.

Again i have no problem with guys having fun but lets be reasonable and call this what it was Showboating. The cavs are good but have not won jackshit yet so lets wait before we say its okay because they are good lol.

Pirateball, let's hope not. I live in Cleveland and dont wish to see the suicide rate if they manage to choke this season away.  Judging by the jaded nature of the Cleveland faithful here, I dont think they can handle anything short of a title this year.

Remember what happened to the Titans when they stomped on the Terrible Towel?  One and done in the playoffs.  Don't anger the sporting gods, they will smite you!

;  Very WELL WRITTEN................  I AGREE 1000%....   When I plunk down the money to see a game, I want to have FUN and I want to see the team I am cheering for having FUN...  Now if they were getting the butts handed to them and they were joking around, I would have an issue with it.  But so would Coach Brown...

I guess it shouldnt surprise me that so many Cavs fans are defending this stupidity.  I mean, I was going to say, "why cant they act like theyve been there before?" but that doesnt apply here.

I wont waste time telling you how Michael would never have done anything so crass or reminding you all of how the Celtics recently raped LeBron in Boston WITHOUT KG.  No, I'll let you enjoy your moment.  I realize you guys just dont know how to win gracefully so you think this is normal.  I can speak from a first person pov and say that if another team had done this to your Cavs, you'd be crying your eyes out on every message board around.

Let's just hope for all of Cleveland's sake and LeBron's sake- wait, let's not hope, let's PRAY that you dont get upset by these same Celtics while enjoying your homecourt advantage.  It'd just be too cruel of a fate for any fan to suffer such a loss just before LeBron begins "playing November Rain" in Madison Square Garden in a couple years.

I hope he gets you this ring before he goes.  It's obviously far more important than doing something like exhibiting a little sportsmanship to you and the Cavs.

Bitter?  Yes.  Bitter that I was so kind to you Cavs fans after the Celtics dropped you last year.  I'd give the Celtics much better odds (small as they may be) after LeBron gave them something to be angry about than before the dancing.

COME ON RELAX...... Do you think that NONE of the other NBA teams celebrate like the CAVS do ????  You need get the GUITAR out of your ???.   It is above all a GAME, right ??????????  If I remember correctly, Boston was doing the same thing last year while they were tearing up the NBA....  Did or do you have an issue with them ?????    As Lebron stated in his after game interview, "They (the Cavs) don't disrespect anyone, but they are also NOT AFRAID of ANYONE" !!!!!!

GO CAVS !!!!!!!!!!!!  LEBRON for MVP !!!!!!
