Buzzer Beaters

The playoff field is set.

Brace yourself for some fun.

The Spurs showed me something by doing what champions do -- winning a game they needed to win against New Orleans to get themselves homecourt advantage in a winnable first-round matchup against Dallas.

The Sixers didn't show me much by beating the Cavaliers' reserves and stopping Cleveland from equaling the best home record in NBA history. But they did get the No. 6 seed and a matchup with the Magic instead of the Celtics. If they were given a choice between facing Boston or Orlando in the first round, they might have been better off choosing the lottery.

All that's left to be decided in the West is homecourt advantage in the 4-5 matchup between Portland and Houston. That'll be a great series. Greg Oden, meet Yao Ming. Welcome to the NBA.

I'll be previewing, analyzing, and dissecting all of the first-round series on Thursday. Once the games start, you can check Buzzer Beaters every night for my take on the night's action. For now, I'll give you a few thoughts/predictions that come to mind on the first round:

Best individual matchup: Joe Johnson vs. Dwyane Wade

Series with the best chance to get personal: Jazz vs. Lakers

Best chance of an upset: Hornets over Nuggets

First team to lose on its home floor: Hawks

Best sweep potential: Celtics, Magic, Lakers

Least sweep potential: Nuggets, Spurs, Blazers/Rockets

Forty games in forty nights. Rest up.

ok mavs game 5 will be tough but i believe they will win
plus, what is orlando doing?!?!? they should've swept the sixers!
same with boston. it should be 3-1
lakers won and hawks evened their series
so, so far the lakers and cavs have advanced and the spurs, hornets, and trail blazers are 1 loss away from 1 and done
(im finding the eastern conference very interesting... with all those 2-2 ties)

Let me rephrase. Those are his averages against Portland, which is a bit more important than if he can put up 30/15 on the Thunder.

The Cavs should be #1 on that list for teams likely to sweep.  Utah is a good team that will give the Lakers a hard time.  I think the Lakers will win the series, but lose one in Utah.  Boston is KG-less.  Even if he were to play, Boston strugles on the road in the playoffs.  They would probably lose one game and take the series.  I can see Orlando sweeping.  But you got to add the Cavs.  The Pistons have limped all season.  The Cavs were were 3-1 against them this year.  The one loss came in Detroit when they still had Billups.  Now he is gone and AI is done.  They have no bench and no hope.

Is Nate planning on starting Greg?  I would have thought he'd go with Pryz again and have GO come off the bench.

I'm not overly worried about Yao, as much as the tough, physical play of the Rockets.  We have sort of allowed the Rockets (and other physical teams) to push us around a bit this season, though lately we've been much better at showing the same (or increased) toughness.  We sure closed out the season on an impressive note.  Let's keep it going.  Go Blazers!

Whatever.. Yao seldom has particularly good games against us.  Houston is a tough matchup for us, however, due to their physical play.  We are a young team that is learning to not get pushed around and this is a big test for us.  We'll see what happens.  Never discredit the Rose Garden's outstanding presence.  Or the way we finished the regular season.

I think the Rockets are the dark horse of the playoffs. I said this in November and I will say it again...THe Rockets have all the pieces to make a serious run to the Finals.  I may even cheer for them since the Celtics losing Kevin Garnett may have put the nail in their coffin.  I hope the playoffs are exciting cause I love the NBA
