No punishment for Rondo, Hinrich

Posted on: May 1, 2009 6:29 pm

The NBA reviewed video Friday of the scuffle between the Celtics' Rajon Rondo and Bulls' Kirk Hinrich and took no further action, ensuring that the two guards will be available Saturday for Game 7 of their epic first-round series Saturday.

The flagrant foul called on Rondo for tossing Hinrich into the scorer's table and then throwing an elbow that didn't connect, and the technical foul assessed to Hinrich for rushing Rondo and shoving him, "stand as called," NBA spokesman Tim Frank said.

It's the right decision because nobody threw or connected with a punch, and neither player took any action to escalate the violence beyond the initial Heat-of-the-moment skirmish. Those are key criteria league officials use in deciding whether to upgrade flagrant one fouls to flagrant twos, and whether to issue suspensions.

Had crew chief Joey Crawford hit Rondo with a flagrant foul, penalty two, he would've been automatically ejected from Game 6, won by the Bulls 128-127 in triple overtime. The league office didn't single out this altercation for review. All flagrant fouls are reviewed to determine if the game officials made the right call.

only cowards call for another teams players to be suspended.

Good call Dustin. Annyone who is really intent on seeing Rondo suspended is looking for an advantage for their team.

Wow he slashed his hand across his throat.  That never happens in sports. Reggie Miller made a choking gesture when he dominated the Knicks no one calls him classless. I could care less about what Lebron and the Cavs did, when they beat Boston. If you ask anyone who covers the NBA they will tell you the KG is one of the classiest guys in the league. Who decided that the Celtics were suppose to beat the Bulls in this series anyways. Take the best player off any other playoff team and i guarantee the series doesn't go to 7 games. What about Joakim Noah screaming like a little bitch anytime he does something productive you don't seem to care about that. I mean the Celtics were suppose beat the Lakers last year (They were clearly the better team) I guess it was pretty classless that they celebrated afterwards. By your logic anyone who is favorited should not celebrate? That makes tons of sense.

Neither were violent and the first was a basketball play. It's called a hard foul to stop a lay-up. The second was a non-basketball play and he got a flagrant which was warranted. Suspensions hurt the game and only cowards call for another teams players to be suspended. Just beat the opposing team at full strength don't try to con your way into a win. When the league takes no action(he did get a flagrant) it does encourage this kind of play and that's a good thing because it's the playoffs and they should be intense. I wish they'd get rid of weak flgrant 2 calls all season but if they just do it in the playoffs thats better than nothing. The game is better when they don't over-regulate it.

Gryzzle, this is from the AP release after game 7 of the Hawks series last year:

" took a behind-the-back pass from , slammed in the dunk to make the lead three dozen points and then slashed his hand across his throat to signal what the already knew.

"It's over," he told the crowd."

It was the same series Pierce was fined for making "menacing gestures" aka flashing gang signs at the Hawks.

True class acts.  What did the Celtics of the 80s do when they swept their first round opponents?  Acted with class.  What did the Bulls do when they swept their first round opponents in the 90s? Acted with class.  My comment is that these Celtics lack class, and it shows with Rondo's cheap shots and Garnett's poor Scarface imitations while dropping F-bombs on the bench.  Beat the teams you're supposed to beat, and move on.

I'll bet you were ranting and raving when LeBron was clowning and laughing on the bench when the Cavs crushed you guys a month ago.
Celebrating is one thing, talking sh*t and patting yourself on the back when you beat teams that you're supposed to beat is a joke.

His shooting was off in game 6 but 19 assists is ridiculous no matter what. It's not his fault Ray Ray was hitting everything. If your teams point guard had a night like that you would be gushing all over him.

PatsVictory1, if you think 4-17 shooting and 0-2 from the line is good point guard play you need your head examined. A majority of those assists came on forced shots by Allen (which he was dropping in like rain, but still).

Really? did they drop confetti from the ceiling? Did they raise a we beat the hawks banner? Did they get rings? Were they not suppose celebrate at all? This topic really has nothing to do with the original post so I don't know why you are so bitter about this. Are you gonna get angry if they celebrate when they beat the bulls tonight?

Are you kidding?  Did you even watch the series last year?  The Celtics were favored to win it all last year and they acted like they had just won the championship after beating the Hawks.

Wow pogo if you knew the rules you would know that he does not have to make a play on the ball. The league saw what everyone else that isn't a bulls fan saw which is rondo actually made a play for his shoulder (his hand bounced off millers shoulder and into his face.) If you are going to punish Rondo then you have to punish Hinrich for the way he reacted.
