No suspension for Pietrus

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Mickael Pietrus won't be fined or suspended for Game 5 of the NBA Finals after the league office reviewed his hard foul against Pau Gasol at the end of overtime in Game 4 and decided not to take further action, has learned.

This was the convenient way to handle this; the last thing anybody wanted was a controversy heading into a closeout game in the Finals. But it was not the right way to handle it. After so many upgrades and downgrades of flagrants this postseason, it was incumbent upon the NBA to get this one right. I don't think they did, but I am willing to give them a chance to explain.

At the competition committee meeting in Chicago last month, team executives told league officials that they need explicit guidelines for what constitutes a flagrant-one and flagrant-two. The rule book defines a flagrant-two as "unnecessary and excessive contact," but Stu Jackson and his comrades have a compendium of factors and circumstances that they consider when reviewing flagrant calls to determine if the punishment was assessed correctly.

The league has agreed to provide these guidelines to players, coaches, media, and fans before next season. Obviously, we could've used them sooner, because it has become virtually impossible to look at a flagrant foul and determine what the league will make of it.

It's supposed to be like obscenity. You're supposed to be able to know it when you see it. To me, Pietrus' foul on Gasol fit that description better than any other flagrant foul I've seen this postseason.

No suspension for Pietrus

Like I stated in an earlier post--nobody had a problem with the Celts running the score up on the Lakers last season in game 6...every point someone said...U don't stop playing the is, what it is....

Go Lakers!!!!

p.s.  The guys calling the game's ALL one-sided.  U will get an occasional mention of something good that the Lakers do.  I wouls turn my radio on...but it's usually a few seconds ahead of the TV.  But will unbias fans bring this up?   No, don't think thing U don't hear about is the fact the Magic gave up on Ariza, and now he's ballin 4 the Purple & Gold.

Theres been a lot of talk about Kobe's elbow Ive seen him intensionally hit players and get away with it. That wasn't one of those times,if you watch it again he turned at the same time the face moved in it was unavoidable for both men since both were in motion. But no one and I mean no one with any sense to their wellbeing could say the foul on Gasol was not "unnecessary and excessive contact". I'll go one further by saying it was "malicious and intensional", I have to agree that it was the worst foul ive seen in these playoffs from the tick tacky flagrant fouls in the Denver, Dallas series.. I do believe he should have been out one game at least. I also believe,   should have been fined

TWO FIST TO THE MIDDLE OF THE BACK WITH INTENSIONAL FORCE TO DO DAMAGE, by no means was he going for the ball, but he was going for revenge since it was the second time in a row Gasol would "bring it down, big man" style on the Orlando. I agree I would have been angry too, losing sucks but somethings are uncalled for.

I agree...Gasol should not have been dunking with just a few seconds left. It doesn't surprise me at all that Pietrus took issue with this. Almost any NBA player would have felt the same way.

Howard has been getting away with a lot more fouls on Gasol under the basket than vice-versa.

They would have to review Dwight's elbows to Pao's ribs then he would be out next game and some of next season too.

yeah a flagrant foul should have been called but by no means was pietrus in the wrong.  he was trying to stop a guy from putting his team up by another two points.  he didn't go for the ball so right there it has to be some sort of flagrant foul but to say it should have been a technical or there should have been a suspension is wrong i believe.  i saw a photo shot of game one where gasol is pushing dwight howard in the back with one hand and grabbing him by the face with his other.  Throughout these playoffs there have been a number of fouls that were questionable.  I don't like the rescinding of fouls after the fact even though I do understand why they do it.  what if i team is awarded a foul shot on a flagrant call and end up winning by one, then after the game the foul is rescinded.  do theyt take away the point that won the game and make them play an overtime the next day?  I think the NBA needs some new blood in their refereeing system.  we see players who retire to do television broadcast.  I would like to see ex-players referee because they have a good idea of what is going on.  These old guys can't even barely supply oxygen to their own brains there so old and decrepit no wonder the blow damn near every call.
