ORLANDO, Fla. -- Phil Jackson didn't want to celebrate until the job was finished. When it was over, when he'd secured his 10th championship to pass Red Auerbach for the most in NBA history, Jackson could finally let go. This was his 10th champagne bath, but it was seven years in the making.
"You can see it in his eyes how ecstatic he is," Kobe Bryant said after the Lakers beat the Orlando Magic 99-86 Sunday night for Jackson's 10th career title. "It's been a long time since he had a champagne bath, and I knew that, so I made sure he became part of our circle and we got him pretty good. He took his glasses off, threw his head back and soaked it all in because this is a special time. And for us to be the team that got him that historic 10th championship is special for us."
Finally free to talk about it, Jackson admitted afterward that he enjoyed passing the great Auerbach but would light a cigar in his honor just the same. Jackson played for Auerbach's nemesis, Red Holzman, with the Knicks, and his relationship with the Celtics' Auerbach was ... well, competitive is the word Jackson once used to describe it, and that's probably the best word. Or at least the most diplomatic.
"I'll smoke a cigar tonight in memory of Red," Jackson said during the trophy presentation. "He was a great guy. I'll smoke a cigar in memory of him."
Auerbach, up in heaven, no doubt will be hoping that the cigar is laced with poison. A cigar? In Red's memory? To celebrate a Lakers championship?
To me, it is pointless to debate whether Auerbach or Jackson is the better coach. The game is different, the rules are different, the players are different, the travel is different. We could do this all day and not have the answer. What we know is that Jackson has won more titles, and that he's done it with great players. How many would Auerbach have won without Russell and Havlicek?
Of all the ways Jackson awkwardly tried to explain his place in history during these Finals, I liked best what he said Sunday night. When asked about how proud Holzman would've been for one of his players to surpass Auerbach, Jackson not only gave credit to Holzman -- but also to Les Harrison, who coached Holzman with the Rochester Royals. Some accuse Jackson of being a product of Michael Jordan, Shaquille O'Neal, and Kobe. But if you say that, then you also have to mention that he's a third-generation coach from the Harrison-Holzman tree.
Jackson told a story about attending Walt Frazier's Hall of Fame induction. When Harrison and Holzman approached him, Harrison told Jackson, "I'm his father, so you're really my grandson."
"So there's a legacy that came that direction with me,"' Jackson said.
Say what you want about Jackson, but let the man light up that cigar and enjoy it.

Phil finally celebrates ... as he shouldJDR13,
How old are you? Because you don't seem to know much about basketball or it's history. You don't win championships with bad teams and bad players. Red Auerbach coached 7 future Hall of Famers on his teams when he won his 9 rings. That's more than Phil Jackson is expected to have at this moment. Right now you can count four (MJ, Pippen, Shaq and Kobe). Those combinations only won when Jackson started coaching them. When Red Auerbach left the Celtics, his team was coached by Bill Russell and they went on to win two more championships. Also, with the way the league is not, back when Aurebach was coaching, there was no free agency or salary caps. So, you could keep the same team for years until your players retired. No threat of a Shaq leaving you or worried about affording your roster next year. That makes coaching, even the same team, difficult to win championships year after year, because the players keep changing. If you follow coaches like Jackson, Larry Brown, Pat Riley and Sloan, you can see they have won with different players and that's difficult no matter how great the players are. |

Phil finally celebrates ... as he shouldYou have to be extremely ignorant or a Celtics homer to think Auerbach was a better coach than Phil Jackson. The Celtics won all their titles under Auerbach in an era when the NBA had 8 teams. That means Auerbach only had to coach the Celtics to beat out 7 other teams to be the best of NBA. It is much harder to win an NBA championship today since you have to beat out 29 other teams to be the best, and it's virtually impossible for one team to dominate for 9 straight years because the circumstances are totally different now. Phil Jackson is the only coach in the modern era to have coached his team to win a 3-peat, and he did it 3 different times with 2 completely different teams. Auerbach knew he couldn't measure up to Phil in terms of coaching accomplishments. That's why he was so bitter and repeated criticized Phil after Phil won his 9th ring.

Phil finally celebrates ... as he shouldKeep in mind Jordan didn't win a championship without Phil, nor did Kobe, nor did Scottie, nor did Shaq. I think this gets lost in the discussion. These guys had other coaches who couldn't win it all with these superstars.

Phil finally celebrates ... as he shouldTrue he has had great players, but Jordan won 0 titles with Collins coaching. Shaq/Kobe had no luck in LA before Jackson, and Kobe didn't get there when Jackson took time off. He is an excellent motivator and has been able to get some of the largest egos in the league: Jordan, Kobe, Shaq, Rodman, etc. to see the team picture. Maybe he is not the greatest Xs and Os head coach, but he is brilliant when it comes to the psychology of the superstar.
On a similar note, you could say the same thing about coach K in the Olympics, but the fact is that those all-start teams had been disappointing for years. He was the one who figured out how to get that talent to work together. Just like Jackson was the one to appeal to Kobe and get him to see how he needed his teammates. No small feat! |

Phil finally celebrates ... as he shouldOh what a mess. It seems that you've spilled your sour green milk all over yourself. I was just wondering if maybe you've heard of the names Cousy, Havlicek, or Sam Jones? And in case you haven't heard of some game named Russell I hear he was a fairly decent center too. Isn't it amazing how Auerbach was able to win all of those championships without any great players on his roster? |

Phil finally celebrates ... as he shouldPhil Jackson...best coach ever? LMAO Every championship he has ever won was because he had a vastly superior team entering the Finals with. Case in point MJ and Scottie in Chicago and Shaq and Kobe in LA. Cigar puffin Red won with a collection of talent as well, but he never had that 1A and 1B combo that could take games over. Also forgetting the best college coach ever...UCLA's John Wooden, even he is hand's down better than Phil.

Phil finally celebrates ... as he shouldDon't get me wrong, Jackson's a good coach, but you have to look at the teams he's been fortunate enogh to coach. 6 rings with a Chicago team that had Jordan and Pippen, and another 3 rings with a LA team that had Kobe and Shaq. |
