Spurs on verge of acquiring Jefferson from Bucks

The San Antonio Spurs fired the first salvo of what is expected to be a busy trading period Tuesday, agreeing in principle to acquire Richard Jefferson from the Milwaukee Bucks for Bruce Bowen, Kurt Thomas, and Fabricio Oberto, a person familiar with the trade confirmed to CBSSports.com.

The Spurs reaffirmed their commitment to making at least one more championship run with their core of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili by agreeing to add Jefferson, a gifted offensive wing player who gives them another way to break down defenses and play at a pace more conducive to the transition-oriented teams in the Western Conference. The trade is "real, real close" to happening, said the person familiar with the situation, who expected the deal to gain approval from the league office later Tuesday.

Jefferson, who turned 29 on Sunday, has the kind of toughness and championship pedigree around which the Spurs have built their four championship teams in the past 11 seasons. He also has been bothered by chronic ankle injuries, but didn't miss a game in the past two seasons, including his first with Milwaukee in 2008-09 after being acquired for Bobby Simmons and Yi Jianlian. But the trade leaves the Spurs lacking big-man depth, opening the possibility that they have another deal in the works.

The Bucks get $11.3 million in salary-cap relief in 2010 with the expiring contracts of Bowen, Thomas, and Oberto coming off the books after next season. Jefferson is due $29.2 million over the next two seasons.

Spurs on verge of acquiring Jefferson from Bucks

FINALLY!  A trade for a younger athletic player that can score on his own!  Spurs have needed this for a couple of years.  This makes up a little for giving up Scola (still a bonehead move if you ask me).  They are one more tweak away from being very dangerous....

This  move isn't the end of the moves from the Spurs.  They just traded away two front court players, one a solid reserve defensively, and the other a starter.  They also lost Bowen, who lately has been looking old.  I know he works hard and he's always prepared, but he's starting to look old.  Udoka is solid, not great.  He's a solid backup.  So is Gooden going to play the 4 and Duncan the 5?  If that's the way it's going to be, it could be interesting, as long as they A) don't foul out, and B) don't get tired.  Right now they're short up front.  That's the real problem with the trade for the Spurs.  That's also why I don't believe they're done dealing just yet.  Whether it's FAs, Draft, or Trade, they're going to need to pick up at least 2 bigs still.  Now, if the core of the Spurs can stay healthy, that's a big IF too, they'll be solid.  But until they resolve their big man issue, they're still second round fodder.  I do like the pick up of Jefferson though.  It'll just be interesting to see if him or Manu will come off the bench though.  Just because Pop does like some athleticism and energy coming off his bench.  But in the fourth you know it'll be Parker, Manu, Jefferson, Gooden, and Duncan, as of right now.  I just hop they actually get a solid big man that can go next to Duncan.  lol Maybe they can go get Rasho back.

Jefferson will make the Spurs better. He loves to fly to the rim and besides the Spurs only gave up a 38 yr old player that didn't even play much last season and avg. 4.2 pts in playoffs and a 36 yr old player who avg. 4.3 pts last year and a 34 yr old player who missed many games because of heart problems and might retire anyway.
Drew Gooden came to the Spurs and did very well considering only playing half a season and not having Timmy at full strength. Matt Bonner has gotten better and his 3 pt shooting helped the Spurs a lot. Don't forget about the 6-11 Mahimi who will be working to get some playing time and will work harder than ever at age 23.
The Spurs are just getting started and will get some more help in the front court...just wait and see.

Spurs on verge of acquiring Jefferson from Bucks

All of you Los Angeles Lakers/Kobe Bryant fans out there claiming that the Spurs are doomed because Bruce Bowen can't be there to stop Kobe anymore I would like to remind you that Bowen was not even the primary defender on Kobe last year so there isn't going to much of a lost there
Yes there will be.  If you do not have a Kobe stopper, bottom line you will lose to the Lakers and Kobe has always owned the Spurs.  I just want to see who the Spurs will sign in the offseason.  They just got rid of practically there whole frontcourt.  How are the spurs going to stop Gasol,Bynum, or Odom.

This would be awesome for the Spurs. If this goes through, consider the Spurs to dominate the Western Conference yet again.
Yeah like Richard Jefferson is going to make the Spurs better than the Lakers,Celtics,Nuggets, and Magic.  The Spurs need more than Richard Jefferson.  They need Frontcourt help

This trade not only improves the Spurs it vaults them right up there with the Lakers. (Spurs and Lakers were well matched all last season minus one game)
No Spursrock.  You just traded away your back up powerforward and back up center.  In my  opininion the Lakers  are still 10x better than you.  The Nuggets are 5x better than you.  I know the spurs are not done yet.  They need a powerforward and or another center to contend with the C's and Lakers or Nuggets and Magic

Ok now that the Spurs have traded away their backup center and power foward, who are they going to get next?  The Lakers are still 10 x better than them.  The Nuggets are still 5x better than the spurs.

Sounds a lot like what I heard after the 2006 season.  Duncan's not old yet.  Neither is Manu.  Their health in question but they both have several good years left if they can be healthy.

Totally Agree

You are telling me that we dont have more to offer than that garbage the Spurs offered?
Jefferson would be perfect for the Jazz. Kevin O'Connor has to go!
