The Celtics' star-laden recruiting pitch for Rasheed Wallace is occurring Thursday afternoon in Detroit. CBSSports.com has learned that Celtics president Danny Ainge, apparently flanked by his Big Three of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce, will court the former Pistons forward in a matter of hours.

Boston is the first team Wallace will meet with as he weighs his free-agent options. The Celtics' contingent had expressed a desire to meet face-to-face with Wallace as soon as the free-agent negotiating period opened at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, but it was decided that the meeting would take place Thursday, a person with knowledge of the situation said. Celtics managing partner Wyc Grousbeck also is believed to be on the trip.

Wallace's camp has heard from eight or nine teams with interest in signing him, but Wallace will narrow the list down based on the teams' chances of making a deep playoff run and how he will fit in. The Celtics, Cavaliers, Spurs, and Lakers certainly fit those criteria and have interest. Houston initially was a team that intrigued Wallace, but that interest has waned with the news that Yao Ming could miss the entire 2009-10 season with a broken foot. Although Denver officials are big fans of Wallace -- GM Mark Warkentien and Wallace were together in Portland -- the Nuggets are not among the teams that have expressed interest.

UPDATE: The Celtics offered Wallace a contract at the anticipated mid-level exception after the three-hour meeting, according to the Boston Globe. The Big Three, Ainge, Grousbeck, and coach Doc Rivers attended the meeting.

'Sheed meeting with Celtics (UPDATE)

Oh my god.  That Spurs line up with Sheed in it would be totally crazy.  I like Sheed and i think he plays with passion, so i forgive him for being a head case here in Detroit after Ben Wallace left.  I think he just needs a fresh start and i'd like to see him go somewhere without alot of egos, plus going the the West would make it even sweeter, lol.

'Sheed meeting with Celtics (UPDATE)

PG- Rajon Rondo
SG- Ray Allen
SF- Paul Pierce
PF- Kevin Garnett
C- Rahseed Wallace

Thats not a fair lineup with 5 allstars potentially on your starting lineup. Pretty sure though with ray allen, KG, pierce, there age and there bodies are catching up on them and I dont see this lineup lasting long. This is probably the last year to see this starting lineup actually healthy and somewhat young.

'Sheed meeting with Celtics (UPDATE)

Why is it idiotic for the fans of the teams mentioned in the article to talk about the positive impace Wallace would have on their team?  Not sure you have a point there.  But thanks for making such an incredibly insightful follow up point to make your post truly "worthwhile" unlike anyone elses.

delayed action - or reaction?

perhaps Danny Ainge was sitting back, waiting to see what everyone else does before making his move. The worst kept secret in the NBA quickly took place - Shaq to Cleveland - and the big dog still has fight left. Orlando volleyed by aquiring Vince Carter - and he has some game left in his tank. San Antonio had already made their bid with Richard Jefferson - now Houston steals Trevor Ariza from the defending champs. So the champs make their move, and fire a huge salvo towards a repeat by signing Ron Artest.

Or maybe Ainge did'nt have a plan, but after witnessing the feeding frenzy, he knows he has to improve his Celtics to return to elite status and a competitive position in this new NBA. It is my opinion that Wallace was already the target, and with the recent developments, it has become even more urgent to sign him. This is definitely an excellent bargaining position for Rasheed Wallace.
It is also a move that benefits the competitive balance of the NBA.

'Sheed meeting with Celtics (UPDATE)

I would love to see this happen too. But its Wallace whos holding it up. He is trying to see what the best offer is out there. The Celts only have enough room for the Mid-Level exeption which is about 5.5 million. If Wallace believes he is worth more then that he will make a break and take the cash in San Antonio or god forbid Cleveland. I hope he decides to come to Boston...Although the Celtics Already said he would be a sixth man, Not in the starting rotation.Laughing

'Sheed meeting with Celtics (UPDATE)

Agreed the need for /sheed is gone. He is a liability on defense and is a selfish player.
he misses assignments on defense and cost the Pistons another championship. He leads the league every year in tech fouls and will cost someone a huge game down the line. GOOD BYE!!!!!
he left Big shot Bob wide open Horry, otherwise the Pistons win in six against San Antonio.Ill throw Iverson in for free.

'Sheed meeting with Celtics (UPDATE)

i hope boston doesnot sign sheed. he will not rebound, play defense or post up, i tink he will ruin their chemistry and be a bad influence on younger players like rondo. he would add another outside offensive threat, but i think boston can do better tha this. they need more size up front and sheed refuses to play in the paint.

'Sheed meeting with Celtics (UPDATE)

I'd like to trade Rondo for Stuckey. I think Rondo's value is at it's peak and we could get a lot for him.  Stuckey could be the man. But who could beat that lineup!?  And with House coming back and Perkins behind Wallace/Garnett, yikes!!

'Sheed meeting with Celtics (UPDATE)

Sportsdvl, you are a jackoff.  I dont think they were going for insightful commentary, they are just enthusiastic fans.  I am looking for your insightful commentary.  "Sheed is still capable of a big payday"?  Sure.  Let's see him sign for bigger money in Memphis or Sacramento then.  Won't happen.  If you are going to insult others, try to back it up with a valid point.  Dick.

That'd be an all-time front line. Kind of reminds me of when the Lakers signed Karl Malone - and then got beat by Sheed right after he was traded to the Pistons. It's in Sheed's court now, but something tells me he'll opt for Boston over Cleveland, who must be bummed about the Villanueva strikeout. Does Cleveland just have the midlevel exception available?
