Phil Jax coming back

Phil Jackson will return to coach the Lakers next season to make a run at his 11th NBA title with Kobe Bryant and Ron Artest.

"After consulting with Lakers team internist Dr. John Moe, I feel confident that I can gainfully pursue an NBA season with another long playoff postseason," Jackson said in a statement posted on Lakers.com. "All things point to go."

Jackson, 63, had another year left on his contract at about $12 million but had a window of several weeks after the NBA Finals to notify Lakers management if he would fulfill the deal. Jackson has undergone two hip replacement operations and has been concerned for several years about the wear and tear of traveling for a full 82-game season and the playoffs. That's why Jackson raised the possibility of only coaching home game next season and turning the reins to assistant Kurt Rambis for road games. The idea was quickly rejected by the Lakers.

It was clear Thursday when Artest announced his intentions to sign with the Lakers after speaking with Jackson that the NBA's career leader with 10 titles would be back.

I have two thoughts: 1) Nobody walks away from $12 million these days. Not even with a limp. And 2) With the unpredictable Artest on the team, Phil will earn every dollar. And he might just earn his 11th ring.

Phil Jax coming back

What kind of logic is that? No logic. Pretty funny comment. This situation is completely different. They just won the title and have become even stronger. The year with Malone, he got injured in last game of conference finals and did not even play in the finals. So how is that situation even relate.

??

Phil Jax coming back

Don't hand LA the trophy just yet.  In 2004, the Lakers team with Shaq, Kobe, Malone, and Gary Payton was supposed to go 79-3 and win it all.  Whoever doubted that team got an earful.  Phil won't lose, they said in unison.  You can't deny Kobe or Shaq, they said with their mouths full of Jack in the box.  What do you know, the Pistons killed them in the finals in a "5 game sweep."  Even if the Lakers survive the west (which will be tougher this year) it's not like the team from the east is going to lay down or not have a chance vs. LA if LA gets to the finals.  You really have to throw all the predictions out the window.  Too many "experts" are always wrong.  DEAD wrong when it comes to predictiing who will make it to the championship (heck, in many sports!!)

Phil Jax coming back

dont ever compare artest to pippen, not even in the same category as pippen is a top 50 all time player and artest will always be nothing but a thug and only compared maybe to rodman but can score, never used to think kobe could be jordan, but he is the next closest thing though

11th championship ring

I think the big question is not if he will win his 11th NBA Championship ring but where is he going to put that ring?  He's out of fingers... maybe one of his toes?  Maybe he'll give it to his wife.  Lakers are absolutely the favorite going into next season.

byron scott's contract ends the same time as phil's. also, if not rambis (i hope not), brian shaw will get a serious look. he has the respect of all the player's. i still think they'll go after byron scott if new orleans doesn't try hard to keep him.

Phil Jax coming back

Outside his leg having to be amputated, I don't think anyone doubted Phil coming back. The Artest signing was icing on the cake, as Phil has said previously he likes Artest's game, and Artest has said he likes Phil's coaching style and has a mancrush on Kobe. Hopefully the Lakers can get Phil #11 and put him out of reach for any coach to tie for championships.

Just like old times...Kobe (Jordan), Artest (Rodman)...and Phil. If they keep Odom, only the Lakers stop themselves from repeating!
