Could Knicks give LeBron his own channel?

Posted on: September 9, 2009 3:17 pm

This from Frank Isola of the New York Daily News: The latest piece of the LeBron-to-New York puzzle has the Knicks' parent company, Cablevision, ready to give LeBron James his own channel as part of a free-agent package to lure him to the Knicks in 2010.

It's all grist for the rumor mill at this point, as Isola points out. But such a plan would present an interesting twist in terms of how the value of such a channel would circumvent NBA salary cap rules. On one level, it would be no different than marketing income that teams in large cities can use to lure free agents. On the other hand, it's not fair that a team that also happens to own an entire cable system serving nearly 3 million residents in one of the largest suburban areas in the nation would be able to dangle that asset as extra compensation not governed by the cap.

I live in Queens -- not Long Island, which is Cablevision's stronghold -- so fortunately I won't be subjected to WLBJ-TV if and when it hits the airwaves. If there are any Cablevision customers out there, riddle me this: What's currently on channel 23?

Could Knicks give LeBron his own channel?

Hmm..Apparently you "Big City Boys" in NY think that no-one in Ohio has cable?  Or own Cable Outlets?  Ever hear of satellite?  Internet tv and broadband transmission? LBJ already has his own channel here..It's called STO (Sports Time Ohio) which shows virtually non-stop games, highlights, interviews, and live games from all the Cleveland and Ohio teams.  With the Browns and Indians playing like they are, guess who gets all the airtime?  The Cavs of course.  Guess who most of the stories about the cavs center around?  LBJ of course.  With satellite, cable, and internet TV available to the WHOLE state of Ohio and broadcast nationally,  LBJ merely has to ask and he will receive.  And he'll have a hell of a lot more viewers here than in NY, because people do not watch losers (except for Browns fans, of course).  You Knick fans are just getting sad now....

Could Knicks give LeBron his own channel?

You sound like a Pistons fan who is mereley hoping that LeBron leaves.   Keep repeating your crap over and over again and you might start to believe it.    Lebron will be in the finals again this season.  if he then leaves to go to New York, he might take them to the playoffs, but that is about it. One round and out for New York.  Lebron would go down in history as a greedy loser who couldn't ever win the ring.  I think that is a very strong deterrant to him leaving Cleveland. The Knicks are a sorry organization and if LeBron does go to to New York for the money than he is an idiot.   They have zero chance to do anything.  He would be better served going to Miami with D- Wade.  There he would at least have a chance to win a few ball games.  Anyone who thinks Lebron could magically transorm the sorry Knicks into a title contender is sorely mistaken.  New York should know that from the Yankees who spend twice the league average in payroll with nothing to show for it.  A-Rod, A-Rod!!! He's our $250 million dollar man.

Could Knicks give LeBron his own channel?

I don't know exactly where Lebron will play, how much money he'll make or exactly what endorsements he'll get. But.. I do not one thing.. there is ZERO CHANCE HE PLAYS IN CLEVELAND AFTER THIS SEASON.....

Cleveland fans make me laugh when they say that Lebron isn't leaving.. it's actually pretty childish to even have that opinion.

The endorsement money he'll make in New York will DESTROY what he makes anywhere else on the planet.... anybody that  thinks otherwise is a complete buffoon !!

And anybody that thinks it doesn't matter and that a few million here or there doesn't matter to Lebron is an even bigger idiot.... I've heard soooooo many Cavs fans say that his heart is in cleveland and money isn't everything....  cracks me up... it's kinda cute in a way the manlove cavs fans have for this guy and the denial they are in....

how many more sleeps till Lebron leaves cavs fans???? lmao....

Well maybe the Cavs counter with hmmmmmm uhhh .. sorry Cleveland- nothing comes to mind..

This is a typical Lebron story though. I remember during the All Star Week Dunk Contest, Lebron could not keep his face and mouth out of the spotlight repeatedly saying- "me: next year" This sounds like the type of foolish ploy that just might lure the egocentric superstar. Sad- the real question should be "Can we win?"

It is a private business deal so if this is plotted correctly, this could work out perfectly. Would make sense for LeBron to do this but maybe he won't be lured by such an interesting offer.

No way NBA would allow that given that the channel would be tied to owners business. Teams would be in uproar with the cap circumvention.
Reminds me when Mark Cuban was renting his guest house to Dennis Rodamn in his brief stay as Maverick. NBA quickly killed that even though Rodman was paying Cuban rent for the privilege. Ammount was supposed to be market value, but gave too much the appearance of impropriety and possibility of cap circumvention.

Just when I thought the Knicks were dead in the water for the Lebron sweepstakes (due to the salary cap constraints), Dolan comes up with this!!!

BRILLIANT!!!  Lebron would be a moron NOT to do this!!!
