Ron Artest: Pass the Hennessy

The NBA now fines players for Tweeting during games, including halftime. Damn, imagine what David Stern would've done to Ron Artest if he'd known the future Malice at the Palace star was sipping Hennessy at halftime while with the Chicago Bulls?

These and other shocking revelations from Artest are coming out in the Dec. 7 edition of the Sporting News, excerpts of which were published on the Sporting News web site Wednesday.

Among the headlines in the Sporting News interview with the controversial Lakers star:

* "I used to drink Hennessy … at halftime," Artest said. "I (kept it) in my locker. I'd just walk to the liquor store (near the stadium) and get it."

* "When I was a 19-year-old father, whew. I was a single pimp! I was wild," Artest said of his days as a college star at St. John's. "A lot of marijuana and alcohol—even before (that age). … I (still) party and I have fun, but not like I used to. I used to drink every night and party every night."

* "It wasn't my fault," he said of the 2004 brawl in Auburn Hills for which he was suspended 73 games and forfeited $7 million. "… I don't see anything I could have done different. The only thing I could have done was have God pause time so I could have said, 'Oh, look, you're about to run in some stands, so stop.'"

* "(Referee) Joey Crawford basically said, 'Who cares about the Houston Rockets? Kobe Bryant's on the floor,'" he said of the Rockets' loss to the Lakers in the '09 Western Conference semifinals.

* "It's weird because people don't think about the whole basketball game," he said of fitting in as a member of Bryant's supporting cast. "There's offense: Kobe averages 30 and is a great offensive player. Then you have defense. So on defense, now I have my supporting cast. … I'm one of the best defenders to ever play basketball, so I'm still the first option on defense."

Artest also said he's "on guard" whenever he sees Ben Wallace, whose altercation with Artest touched off the melee at the Palace. "I'm always in the mood to fight him," Artest said. "… I'll get suspended 10 games, 15 games (because) I'll just fight him right there. It won't go into the stands."

The NBA is aware of the comments, though it's unclear whether any disciplinary action is forthcoming. Clearly, the comments that will generate the most scrutiny are those about drinking during games and the refs wanting the Lakers to beat the Rockets. Already, some of Artest's former teammates and other members of the organization who were there with him are downplaying the comments , chalking them up to, "Ron being Ron," according to the Chicago Tribune.

Either way, gotta love him.

Fuck You, You racist bitch. You are one of those assholes that get a lot of courage when communicating online but in person you will not say a damn thing to say. I also read the comment that you posted about the President, it is a damn shame that will still have such ignorance and bigotry in our society.

Ron Artest: Pass the Hennessy

Just remember every NBA player and former player stated they would have done the same thing.  I think most men in that situation would have done the same.  You are on the court after getting pushed by another player and a beer hits you from the stands.  What would have been your immediate reaction?

Haha as a Chicago Bull Fan, this cracks me up. Yeah he sounds like a Bozo, but come on guys the generation playin ball before us were smokin dope and drinking too, some before during and after the games. Thats not what makes him an idiot, what makes Ron Artest and idiot is what he does, actions speak volumes, and Artest obviously cant keep his cool.  Suspension worthy, maybe a game, or two, chalk it up to conduct policy, and be on with it.  This is a non issue Ron Artest is a grown man and can act as he wishes, just he must realize there are consequences and he will have to pay them if he screws up.  I like character in my leagues, but im glad Ron Artest is not in the majority in professional sports.  Villians have a place in this world as much as hero's so eat it up sports nation.

Drinking during games is one thing. Drinking Hennessy? Awesome! Ron Artest may not always be the consumate professional but he is always the consumate entertainer and you can't say he isn't a fairly interesting person. I just hope he says something about the Jewish rec center he used to play ball at when he lived in Indiana. How can you not love the guy?

Ron Artest: I'm absolutely shocked and disgusted

This is horrible. I can't believe what sports are coming to.  First we find out that Tiger is banging REALLY HOT chicks and now this. Great. Just f****** great.  Ron Artest can drink Hennessy at halftime and is still a good enough athlete(or an accomplished alcoholic. Or both.) to function well enough to play NBA basketball?  The worst part? I'm jealous. LOL.  Get down with your bad self Mr. Artest.

What? Are you an idoit? Manny forgets to sometimes run after the ball is hit or actually make a play on the ball when in the field. But, when you put up .300  40 hr and 100 rbi consistently, you're cut major slack for what you are. Manny is lazy, he doesn't try. He just coasts on his skill. I like Manny, but every time I hear Manny being Manny is an insult to the rest of the players on the team who actually give 100%.
On the other hand, I have never seen Artest not try to play at an extreme competitive nature. After all, he's a defensive stopper and that can only be done by hard work. I think he plays hard and some things come easy for him, but I don't question his play during game time. The Hennessey thing being stupid and all, but tell me when he gave up. If anything I'll tell you who is a quitter, Rasheed Wallace. He gets demoralized when getting blown out that he usually gets himself thrown from the game for something stupid during play that won't matter for his team.

Seriously Berger -- "Either way, gotta love him."  Gotta love him?  Artest is a lowlife who was blessed with the ability to rebound.  His rant unfortunately (again) highlights everything wrong with our priorities and what we expect from athletes.  Can you imagine anyone getting away with this behavior at work, let alone being coddled all through college and professional life despite being an arrogant lowlife?  Gotta love him?  Not so much. I wouldn't go so far to say gotta despise him, because to each his own as long as you aren't hurting someone else.  But gotta be disappointed, and really nauseated that he makes more money in one game than hard working people make in years.
