Paul to have knee surgery, miss at least 1 month

A loss to the Chicago Bulls that didn't need to happen was even more costly than the New Orleans Hornets imagined.

All-Star point guard Chris Paul hurt his left knee chasing a needless court-length pass by David West Friday night during a 108-106 overtime loss to the Bulls. As a result, Paul will have the knee scoped and is expected to miss at least a month, sources confirmed to CBSSports.com Sunday night.

More will be known about the severity of a meniscus tear in Paul's left knee once the scope is performed Monday, but it's clear that he will miss the All-Star Game and at least a month of time. Yahoo! Sports first reported that Paul would need surgery.

One person familiar with the situation told CBSSports.com that Paul tweaked the knee Wednesday night in a 123-110 victory at Golden State. On Friday night, the Hornets appeared to have a victory over the Bulls wrapped up when West threw a court-length pass out of Paul's reach in the final seconds of regulation. Paul aggravated the knee, and the Bulls parlayed the turnover into an overtime-forcing basket.

Paul's absence will not only impair the Hornets' quest for a playoff spot, it also will open an All-Star spot for Denver's Chauncey Billups or Golden State's Monta Ellis, two deserving Western Conference guards who were left off the coaches' list of reserves named last week.

It's about more than stats as I've already pointed out.  I'd argue that because Billups's team is having a far more successfull season, he is indeed have a better year than Ellis.

There's no way Billups deserves the nod over Ellis. Billups is a good player. A good leader but he's not having a better year than Monta.

What your breakdown of the stats doesn't tell you is all of the intangibles that Billups brings to the table.  First, he's a far superior defender to Ellis.  He is also the unquestionable leader of the Nuggets; he quarterback's their offense, and rallies the team when they go through a slump.

You were right when you said it wasn't close; you just picked the wrong guy.

Give it to Monta already. This isn't even close. True the Warriors have a bad record but its not Monta fault that Warriors players have missed on 160+ games this season.

Billups
19.3ppg 6.1ast  3.1reb  1.3stl 42.7%FG  42.2%3FG

Ellis
25.8ppg   5.5ast  4.3reb  2.2stl 45.7%FG  30.5%3FG

for the most part All-Star selection should be based on individual performance but I will agree your team record should have a little something to do with it. Unless you're having a amazing season which Monta is having. The spot has to go to Monta hands down not question.

A stupid play has horrible consequences. Firing the ball out of control, out of bounds let the Bulls back in and Paul goes down.

Bet West wishes he could have that one back.

I agree.  Monta Ellis is one of the most underrated players in the NBA.  It's about time he gets some respect by getting rewarded with an All-Star Game invite.  The only thing holding Ellis back is Golden State's horrible record of 13-33.

Stevie that is a pretty ridiculous statement to make about Paul's injury since the full extent of the tear isn't known yet. Wait until all the medical information is in before you start with the hockey comparison.

I don't care what your stats look like, if your team is 13-33 not a single player from that team deserves the All-Star game. Billups is the leader and MVP of the team with the 3rd best record in the NBA. Without Billups, the Nuggets are right in the middle of the pack with everyone else. Billups is the no-brainer pick to replace Paul.
