Ainge fine: Funny but deserved

My thoughts on Celtics president Danny Ainge being fined $25,000 Thursday for throwing a towel in the air behind the basket in an effort to distract the Cavaliers' J.J. Hickson at the free-throw line during Boston's Game 2 victory? Oh, he deserved it. It was funny, but he deserved it.

The NBA's news release says Ainge engaged in "conduct detrimental to the game" and that he created an "unauthorized distraction."

That makes me wonder what constitutes an authorized distraction. But I can't argue with this penalty. Paying customers can whack Thunder sticks together, wave their arms, yell about a free-throw shooter's maternal relative -- pretty much anything they want to do, short of throwing something onto the court.

Players, coaches and team executives are held to a higher standard of conduct, and they should be.

Here's the YouTube clip of Ainge's actions, in case you missed it. Coincidentally, Hickson missed the first free throw with Ainge doing nothing. As Hickson is shooting the second free throw, you can see Ainge in a suit to the right of the basket (from Hickson's point of view), and you can see the towel fluttering into the air. Hickson made that free throw.

I wonder how much Ainge would've been fined if he'd missed it?

What kind of fines do you think Michael Jordan will get for riding the refs during games?

White skinned privilege?  What a fool you are.  25,000 dollar fine for throwing a towel in the air and that is not tough enough?  What do you want him to get?  Suspension?  Jail time?  My God.  He was playing with the fans sitting around him.  My god I hate ignorance

how is he a jerk for doing this lmao, he threw a towel in the air, personally I would love for the Bulls owner to be that much of a fan of the game that he gets involved like any fan would. Seriously just because the guy owns the team, he's not allowed to act life a fan during the game

I'm very comfortable with Ainge being fined.  I don't know how it can get to $25,000.  While Ainge is a huge jerk I don't know that the rules specificly prohibit this, so what is the piling on for?  I think something in the neighborhood of $1,000 would be appropriate.

Listen to yourself.  Stand back and look in the mirror.  Maybe now you can see the jerk.  And it has nothing to do with the color of anybody's skin.  The man threw a towel in the air.......get a grip for cryin out loud.

What this means is that from now on whoever is Ainge's companion for the games will have the job of throwing towels in the air during opposition free throws. Given the number of star calls LeBron gets that person is going to need to ice down their arm afterwards from tossing the towel so much. Maybe they could get one of those arm wraps that so many players wear these days.

The thing about this that i find funny is that Ainge does this everygame. He always sits baseline and he always jumps up and tries to distract opposing players from hitting a free throw. It's amusing that he gets fined for this, when this is really something he does commonly (though not necisarrily towel throwing, but i mean, it's a towel, these guys are professional athletes paid millions to make a shot that they've been taking since rec basketball)

That was funny.  I'll bet Ainge was laughing and having fun while doing it.  Goes to show you that he's probably a fun guy to be around and joke with and not some stuffy shirt, boring, monotoned voice executive.  David Stern had to adress it because the media had made such a big deal out of it.

Ainge has always been a Grade-A A-hole

Jerk among jerks. Gets away with it because of White Skin Privilege.
