Pierce tells Celtics he's opting out (UPDATE)

Add Paul Pierce to the growing list of elite free agents. The Celtics' star notified the team Tuesday that, as expected, he'll exercise the early termination option in his contract and become an unrestricted free agent, said his agent, Jeff Schwartz.

Under normal circumstances, Pierce, 32, would be pretty well assured of returning to Boston in an attempt to chase down another championship. But these are not normal times for the Celtics. Ray Allen is an unrestricted free agent, too, and coach Doc Rivers continues to wrestle with the decision of whether to return to the bench next season or watch his children play college sports.

In some ways, it's a risky move for Pierce to leave $21.5 million on the table next season. But with so many teams chaseing free agents, Pierce will generate plenty of interest from those who strike out on the top-tier players. If nothing else, Pierce re-ups with the Celtics and surpasses that amount with a multi-year deal.

Though the Celtics want to retain Pierce, it's actually welcome news that he's opting out. Even if Boston pays Pierce the max -- $20.8 million next season for a player of his experience -- they still save $1.5 million due to luxury tax implications. Pierce will make up the difference on the back end, while also locking in for three or four more years under the current salary rules, which will be tilted in the owners' favor in the next collective bargaining agreement. Meanwhile, the Celtics will set about trying to determine if their core -- including Rivers -- is staying together.

Even in the unlikely event that Allen and Pierce both leave, it's farfetched for the Celtics to have enough cap room to afford a marquee free agent. They would have flexibility, however, for sign-and-trades.

Pierce tells Celtics he's opting out (UPDATE)

Paul Pierce most likely has decided to opt out because the Celtics didn't win it all.  I am wondering if they had if he would have stayed.  I don't see him wanting to finish out his career with the Lakers but if he wants a chance to win it all again that certainly is a possibility with them.

I think Farmer is a great bench guy for the Lakers and has proven his worth, I say they should keep him but get rid of Walkton and Sasha

Would Pierce go to O-town for a sign and trade for Vince Carter, and Brandon Bass or JJ Reddick??

Gee manc 1999, wonder why your comment "small-minded like most every other American to a WORLD game, one that wasnt invented by Americans" only rated 24 points?

We didn't invent THE WORLD GAME...sounds soooo impressive....but we did invent instant replay which FIFA is now seriously considering because the referee's bias/incompetence. But this is typical of every European-based sport; from Formula 1 to Cycling, Euro-activities are replete with cheating, scandal and biased officiating. It’s just the way it is...they accept this as part of sport. I have never understood it but I was told it is their way of "justifying" or "rationalizing" loses by their favorites while diminishing the accomplishments of others... i.e., Lance Armstrong. Unfortunately, some WORLD GAME fans get a little TOO disappointed and take out their frustrations on opponent’s fans, each other and whatever they can burn or break.

FIFA realizes the true goose-that-laid-the-golden-egg cannot be found in Brazil, Argentina or Germany. It can be found in the USA. Win the hearts and minds of Americans and the sky is the limit. BUT FIFA knows Americans will not tolerate a sport which allows injustices to be the norm...enter instant replay...so no more excuses England or France from now on when you lose, you lose...no more “what ifs”.

Pierce tells Celtics he's opting out (UPDATE)

Now that's funny...

I just heard on ESPN520, ESPN Viva la France, and ESPNStardate 3512.6 that Pierce will not be playing either striker or mid fielder, he will play a brand new position called “Crying Chunky”. It was developed by former Cleveland Coaching Legend Mike Brown who has agreed to coach the newly-formed "Paris-Milan
Dysfunctionals" in the "Unisex Division" of the SWBWNT (Slow White Boys With No Talent) League of FIFA Section VIII. Rumor has it Brown was chosen because of his proven-ability to NOT lead and besides according to Legendary Coach Paul Michelle Andre Rene Baboo of Crete, "In European football we do not use clip boards or strategy, Monsieur Brown has never been seen using either while coaching American basketball". He continued by suggesting Brown may influence OTHER NBA stars to follow Pierce to the newly-formed Section VIII. His logic was based in the fact that, "Most NBA players grew up in Section VIII, it seems only logical they end their professional careers in Section VIII."

More to follow…

Who cares if the guy flops. He is still a great player. He is not the only one that flops.... Pau Gasol for instance. Every player flops at some points in their career. The good news is, as bad as NBA refs are, they won't throw a player out of a game for said "flop" (as in the one that seemingly hit the person that had taken a dive).  Paul Pierce will end up in a nice situation to win another championship. Where that is, I don't know. The Big Three is all but dead now. The new threat in the east, well... if it is a good offseason for Chicago, then teams will be shivering at a lineup that will include LeBron James, Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, Chris Bosh, and Taj Gibson.  That is of course that the perfect scenario happens of course Wink

Basketball players flop, dive, and try to draw more fouls than soccer players. You must be small-minded like most every other American to a WORLD game, one that wasnt invented by Americans
