Paul Pierce is officially staying in green-and-white, finalizing his four-year, $61 million contract with the Celtics Saturday night, a person with knowledge of the agreement told CBSSports.com.

Pierce had opted out of the final year of his contract, which would've paid him $21.5 million, in part to give the Celtics flexibility to retain free agent Ray Allen and make a run at another championship with coach Doc Rivers, who announced this week he was returning for the final year of his contract. Pierce, 32, accepted less than the maximum the Celtics could have paid him as a 10-plus-year veteran, which was $96 million over four years. But a person familiar with the situation said the fourth year was fully guaranteed, which had been a sticking point in the negotiations.

Now, the Celtics will focus on retaining Allen, a move that would keep the Big Three -- and point guard Rajon Rondo -- intact for a run at the franchise's 18th championship. Also Saturday night, NBA.com's David Aldridge reported that forward Rasheed Wallace -- who informed the team after the NBA Finals that he planned to retire -- is possibly reconsidering that decision.

Let me see if I understand this, you don't root for your Sixers or any other team.  Yet, you feel such a strong compunction to hate on a classy guy from a classy franchise who take 2/3 of the max to come back to the team that drafted him. You sir are an idiot and another fine example of the stereotypic douche-bag phildelphia fan.  Good for you.

Pierce, Celts finalize 4-year, $61 million deal

Watching this offensive feeding frenzy by Lebron, Bosh, Wade whose actions will drive ticket prices up and send salaries into the unsustainable level it is great to see someone with enough of a love for the game that he settles for less to have a shot at a ring. The others talk the talk "It is all about winning" but in the end it appears to be "show me the money".

So Pierce for 61 Million and Joe Johnson gets 125 million. What's wrong with this picture?

Yep...its not always about the $$ with everyone....anyone who says anything negative about this guy(and yes Ive heard people say some negative things about him) does not understand what a warrior he is.  One of the all time Celtic greats, and thats saying a lot, Im glad hes staying in Boston to finish his career and it would only be fitting to get him at least one more title!!  I am proud to have Paul Pierce on my team!!  One of, if not the most underrated player in the game.

Could Paul Pierce be the last of the final "rank and file" winners actually acting on behalf of the spirit of selflessness or comraderie, willing to become legendary and loyal over "show me the money" and the me first, "time stops with me" attitude we've all come to know and hate? Kudos to you, Paul. My cup runneth over...granted you are no pauper, nor should you be...but wow....probably the only move of the offseason that will truly impress me, one that was noticeably lacking in consideration of the third person pov:  One of substance... -- but in all seriousness, even 61million to play a game well into your 30"s isn't exactly charity work...baby steps...

Great deal by all parties. Pierce doesnt hold up the Celts while still enabling them to make a run next year.
