Prokhorov on Melo: Enough

NEWARK, N.J. -- Mikhail Prokhorov opened this command performance with a joke, saying he didn't know there were so many fans of Russian culture.

But Prokhorov wasn't here solely to promote his team's ties to his homeland, and his audience wasn't here for that, either. They were here to listen to what came next: a bombshell.

The Nets are out of the Carmelo Anthony sweepstakes.

For good.

"Really I am not happy with the way how this deal has gone until now," the stone-faced Russian billionaire said Tuesday night. "It has taken too long. It has been played out in public. And uncertainty has taken a toll on the players. And I believe that has cost us several games. …

"So I think the management of the team did a great job," Prokhorov said. "But there comes a time when the price is simply too expensive. I am instructing our team to walk away from the deal. And the meeting that was supposed to be held by our management tomorrow in Denver with Carmelo is hereby canceled."

Kaboom.
Prokhorov was asked if he ever got an answer from Anthony about whether he would agree to an extension with the Nets -- the crucial trigger in any trade and but one that CBSSports.com reported last month and as recently as Sunday that Anthony would decline.

"You know, I never met with Carmelo and I never spoke with him," Prokhorov said. "Maybe he sent me an email, but really I don’t use computer and that’s why maybe I have missed it. Or maybe the carrier pigeon got lost."

Prokhorov, and later team president Billy King, admitted that they never had a firm commitment from Anthony that he would sign an extension. In fact, it wasn't even clear that the Nets would've been able to secure a meeting in Denver Wednesday with the three-time All-Star. Prokhorov and King were clear that Nets management were planning to travel to Colorado, but there was no indication Anthony would meet with them -- despite King's statement that the team received permission from the Nuggets Monday night.

"I never received any negative information," Prokhorov said. "All the information was really mixed. There was not any direct information."

What Prokhorov made clear several times, however, is that there is no turning back from this decision -- regardless of what trade demands the Nuggets may drop in the future. Asked early in this incredible news conference if this decision was final, Prokhorov said, "Of course."
The last question was one more attempt to offer Prokhorov some wiggle room. He didn't budge.

"I think I was absolutely clear on this matter," he said.

What else was absolutely clear? The two most important figures in this endless trade negotiation were vastly underestimated: Prokhorov and Anthony.

Prokhorov on Melo: Enough

Guys like Melo have ruined the NBA.
I just laugh at the NBA. There is a reason that it's popularity is dropping like a stone, but these millionaire wanna be thugs just don't get it. In 5 years, when all of the star players are playing on what will be suedo all star teams in LA, NY and Miami, the rest of the nation won't give a rip about the league. Go ahead. Join forces nimrods. That's what the idiot Stern wants anyway. He would rather see two or three dominant teams than see a league that is strong top to bottom.

Sad for NBA fans that neither the players, the union, or Stern gets it. There is a reason that the NFL beats it like a drum in popularity. It's because you can win in KC, or GB, or Jacksonville, or New Orleans, or even St Louis......

It makes for a better product. The dolts who run MLB and the NBA seem to have the idea that the sporting world revolves around the East Coast and LA. The NFL realizes that their sporting world revolves around any given Sunday, anyone can beat anyone.

Actually, Amar'e signed with the Knicks in the hopes of luring Lebron, who had at one point wanted the Cavs to trade for Stoudemire. At that point, the Knicks were in no way hoping to get Carmelo. This is actually fairly old news. I'm surprised you missed it. In fact, Lebron then went on to sign with the Heat, announcing his decision on ESPN. It was actually quite a big thing this past offseason.

A little perspective is in order.

The Nets ownership is far less ignorant, IMO, than the Nuggets, who have wasted so much energy chasing Carmelo Anthony's whim.

Carmelo Anthony need to be shown his contract with Denver. If needed, his mouthpiece agent can read it and explain it to Anthony.

It says he plays for Denver. It does not say he can choose to change his mind, or the contract, and change the team affiliation to say The New York Knicks.

I feel sorry for Chauncey Billips, who was an innocent bystander in this would be drive-by shooting orchestrated by Carmelo Anthony. If I were Billips, I think I might take a few more jumpers and let Carmelo do what he obviously wants to do- fend for himself.

How was or is Stoudamire pathetic?? He went to New York with no supporting cast at all.  No???
Are you seriously trying to tell me, that you actually believe that 'Melo and Stoudamire have never had a conversation about how "Melo wanted to sign with the Knicks as a FA?

C'mon. There is a reason that Stoudamire would sign with a doormat like NY. He KNEW what 'Melo was planning on doing, and he knew it from the beginning.

Like I said, it's pathetic when these guys don't have the will to win one on their own....Stoudamire included.

MELO SMOKE DA ROCK

IN SOVIET RUSSIA AKA (THE MOTHERLAND)  MELO WOULD NOT BE SHOOTIN THE ROCK  HE WOULD BE SMOKING THE ROCK.

;

What and idiot. He is leaving tens of millions of dollars on the line by refusing to meet with the Nets and sign an extension. What an idiot. This idiot BLAB'S about all he wants to do is win and win a championship. MY GOD YOU FREAKING RETARD. Prokhorov is rolling out his wallet and has done everything to show you that he is serious about winning a championship in the next 5 years and is willing to make you his center piece and surround you with quality players.   BUT MELO THE ATTENTION WHORE refuses to meet with them and is a total pu*ssy towards Nuggets fans by not revealing his true intentions just sits on the side line and complains about his name being thrown around.

Go ahead you piece of trash. Go to the Knicks. Go to New York City and play with Amare and get NO WHERE. Go try and form your own little treehouse club like PRINCESS LEBRON did. The knicks won't have any money to throw at CP3 and you are not going to win a championship with there current line up. Go to New York City so your old @SS wife can try and revive her career on MTV a network aimed a teens and with trashy and brain cell killing programming. Go there and try and be in the lime light. You'll fit in with every other sports team there, especially all the other Drama Queen, over payed idiots on the Jets. Lol now when you get a DUI or beat your wife or get in trouble with the law you won't just be in 1 news paper but a dozen. SO GFY

Warmest Regards,

Nuggets Fans.
