Lakers open to attending Arenas workout

Posted on: February 8, 2012 4:29 pm
Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak is awaiting word on details of a workout Gilbert Arenas is planning in Los Angeles later this week and is open-minded about attending, two people with knowledge of the situation told Wednesday.

Although the Lakers have publicly been noncommittal about whether to pursue the three-time All-Star, Kupchak has nothing to lose by evaluating Arenas as a potential solution to the team's point guard woes. The workout date has not yet been set, but Kupchak is said to be willing to attend depending on timing and logistics.

"The Lakers are going to take a look at him," one of the people familiar with the matter said.

Arenas, 30, was waived by the Magic via the amnesty clause after averaging 8.0 points in 49 games for Orlando last season, including two starts. In a total of 70 games for Orlando and Washington in 2010-11, Arenas averaged 10.8 points -- his first full season since serving a 50-game suspension for bringing guns into the Wizards' locker room in December 2009.

Arenas played only 47 games in the previous three seasons due to an assortment of knee injuries, and there are doubts among NBA executives about whether he has anything left. But the Lakers, with no ball-handling guard who can break down opposing defenses, are seeking a spark anywhere they can find it. The team also has been linked with Cleveland's Ramon Sessions and Houston's Jonny Flynn, though neither situation has progressed.

While the Lakers are on the East Coast, losing in Philadelphia Monday night and playing at Boston Thursday and at New York Friday, Kupchak has stayed in L.A. and would be in position to attend Arenas' workout personally.

I would like to start by saying I am a Laker fan since the 80's.Arenas has made some serious mistakes but it would not hurt to check out his work-out this week, and to keep an open mind.Kupchak and the Lakers need a guard now if they are going anyware in the playoffs this year. They have the 2nd best center in the league with Bynum and need to quit with the Howard possible trade talk.Bynum will only get better and hopefully keep up his health. With the shortened schedule and no preseason to get in shape NBA players have been dropping like flies so far or sitting out the 2nd of back to back games.Arenas would be a good fit in LA and he should atleast get a look from Kupchak.Right now we can not win on the road and we will be lucky to make the playoffs without some kind of change or shake up.

Funny post at the guy that said Arenas can still play at a high level. He hasn't played at a high level in several years. Did God give you some secret insight Orlando didn't know?

BRESS, I am from the LA area and like you I stand behind my team. My team is the Lakers and your right this version of the Lakers is slowly ending. However, there are a few things I like to point out:

1) The NBA is much more competitive than in the past - that's good

2) I will assume you do not get to watch all the Laker games but even this squad is competitive in the league and are in most games until the end.

3) Given this, don't be suprised if within the next few seasons you don't see the same "feared" Laker team as in the past with aqusitions of players.

Something to keep in mind BREES - the Lakers have been in the same situation they find themsevles in now throughout their history. Of course we have seen how they adapted throughout those years and situations.

17 banners don't lie!

Like I said before, if Gilbert Arenas has his head on straight and his heart into playing NBA basketball the Los Angeles Lakers will be making a huge move by signing him. Arenas can still play basketball at a very high level, but it's all up to him whether he really wants to do it. He's not going to be the same player from his days leading the Washington Wizards into the NBA Playoffs, but he doesn't need to be to help the Lakers. I can't wait to see him play alongside Kobe Bryant and think the two will play very well together.

Im sure not a Lakers fan but this was a story from last week if Arenas wasnt ready to get signed and ready to play a week of work outs wont make a differance if he was in shape the sorry Lakers would have signed him a long time ago he could be dynamic enough to put them somewhat back on the map Fisher is done

ShaneFM... You are probably a front-runner Buddy.  Damn right I am a Hornets Fan.  I support all of my local teams, win or lose.  The Lakers are a joke.  They scare NOBODY anymore.  Their mystique is gone.  Where are you from, ShaneFM??  I noticed you don't have the balls to post where you are from in your profile.  I hope it is LA or nearby.  If not, you are a jock- sniffing front- runner.  Let me guess... you a NY Giants fan?  How about the St. Louis Cardinals in baseball?  Alabama Crimson Tide in College Football?  Don't talk about grown ups, son... I am grown up.  I state obvious facts... such as the Lakers are done.  Arenas will make the lockerroom much safer with all the firearms, though!!  Go Fakers.

for all of those hating on this just answer 2 queastions for me:

Is Gilbert Arenas better than the following players:
Derek Fisher, Steve Blake, Andrew Goudelock and Darius Morris?

Now that you have answered yes to the previous question, can Arenas conceivably help the Lakers?

It may be desperate, but the Lakers are fools to sit by idle in this.  They look bad right now...this is being covered up by the monster seasons kobe and Bynum are having.
