NFL Playoffs Need Tweaking........

Posted on: December 26, 2008 12:42 pm

It is possible that 2 8 - 8 teams could make the NFL Playoffs this season and that's not right......

The Arizona Cardinals are 8 - 7 but thet have already locked up the NFC West.  A loss 2 the improving Seahawks would drop 'Zona 2 an 8- 8 record and that could very well happen......

The Chargers,  a gm under .500 @ 7 - 8,  can lock up the AFC West with a win over The Broncos on Sunday night,  hopefully that won't happen,  me being a Broncos fan and all.......

There's nothing " playoff - caliber " about being a .500 team.......

But that's not the worst of it......It is possible 5 or more teams could wind up with better records than the AFC and NFC West division winners and b shut out of the playoffs.......The Pats could finish 11 - 5 but not make it 2 the 2nd season if both The Ravens and The Dolphins win on Sunday........

Even if 'Zona and The Broncos pull out the W's on Sunday and win their respective divisions with 9 - 7 records,  IMO,  they still are not playoff worthy......@ least not this yr,  not with all of the good teams out there.......

This is what happens when u let division winners receive an automatic spot in the playoffs,  regardless of their win - loss records....I don't like in Baseball and not in Football either.........

I say let the 6 teams with the best records from each conference duke it out 4 a shot @ The Super Bowl.........

Again,  this is only my opinion.........

NFL Playoffs Need Tweaking........

jrock -- I read a story about this from one of the sports writers on Yahoo! It does seem unfair, but I think the NFL has one of the most sensible playoff systems. The way it is set up makes things fairly exciting for the fans. It doesn't seem like too many better teams get aced out very often. I could be wrong, not having researched it, but I don't recall it being as much of an issue in the past as it looks to be this year. Just because fan bases for a few teams are up in arms doesn't necessarily mean you throw out the baby with the bath water.

Here's my idea:

Lop a few weeks off the regular season. Make it 14 games, six against your three conference foes and eight more. Then, have an all-in "tournament," with all 32 teams seeded by record. Use the tiebreakers to shake that out, etc. You would have your conference champs at the end of the fourth week, then you could have the Super Bowl or wait a couple of weeks to have it.

That idea is off the top of my head, just thinking out loud. That type of system would keep fans of all teams interested longer, at least until the Round of 32 started anyway. That way, at least logically, the teams with better records should win out over weaker teams, but you never know what surprises you might see, too.
