Yankees 2009 - Bold Predictions by Stick

Posted on: December 25, 2008 8:29 pm

My first blog.  Pretty cool.

I'm a huge Yankees fan.  I went to 7 home games last year and I try to watch at least 100 games on TV every year.  I'm from Ontario, Canada but I live in NJ now and I used to root for the Expos but now the Yankees are my team.

My 2 favorite MLB players are AJ Burnett and Scott Kazmir.  Needless to say, I'm really excited that AJ is a Yankee now.  The CC signing is nice but like they say, "Fat guys fall fast."  However, "There's nothing wrong with one hefty lefty in your rotation."  Chicken Wing (Wang) should be ready to go by opening day...JOBA rules...all that leaves is the last spot for Hughes, Kennedy, or maybe Coke to get completely bombed once every 5 days.  Not too'd be even better if they could resign Pettitte to only get slightly bombed once a week but I don't think it matter much.

The offense is strong to quite strong.  Damon still has some wheels, Jeter should hit .330 or so this year, Big Tex will start off slow but if he can endure the harsh criticism early on (not like A-Rod in ’04) then he should be fine, since coming to the Yankees A-Rod only plays well in odd-numbered years so 2009 should be another MVP type season for him, Matsui will return to form and be a good #5 hitter, Posada will play just well enough not to get benched, Cano should bounce back to being a .300 hitter, Nady will have a steady but not too exciting year in RF (aka a Paul O’Neil type of year), and Melky and Brett will take turns stinking up the bottom of the lineup all year unless the Yankees trade for Cameron or bring back Bernie!

Bullpen?  I think it all depends on Mariano.  Or does it?  Marte has some experiencing closing games and I still have a lot of faith in Bruney and Edwar Ramirez in the late innings.  I think Coke will be a nice setup guy when (not if) Mariano breaks down this year.  I’m just afraid that the Yankees will send Joba back to the bullpen and try to coast by with Hughes and Kennedy in the rotation.  I can almost deal with Hughes in the rotation because, even though his fastball stinks, his curveball can keep the other team under 7 runs most nights.  Kennedy has no skills and will kill the Yankees if allowed.

My bold predictions =

  1. Yankees will win 100 games (even) this year.
  2. Mariano will not finish the season and his career ends due to injury.
  3. A-Rod wins the MVP.
  4. AJ Burnett wins the Cy Young.
  5. Brett Gardner spends most of the season in the Minors.
  6. Nick Swisher finishes the season with a .190 batting average and plays sparingly.
  7. Bernie Williams will be back in pinstripes this year.
  8. The pitching rotation will look like this – Sabathia, Wang, Burnett, Joba, and Hughes.
  9. The bullpen will look like this – Mariano (CL), Marte (Setup), Ramirez, Coke, Bruney, and Aceves and Kennedy will be the long relievers.
  10. The batting order will look like this – Damon, Jeter, Big Tex, A-Rod, Matsui, Posada, Cano, Nady, and Melky.  The bench bats will be Brett Gardner, Nick Swisher, Jose Molina, and Bernie Williams.

Yankees 2009 - Bold Predictions by Stick

1 prediction, there will be a federal investigation on how the Yankees can take money from tax payers to build their stadium, but spend a quarter of a billion on payroll
2, The steinbrenners since they already took away benefits like health care for their lower end employees, will now ask the secretaries and other low salary employees to kick in for a buffet spread for the media. This after much criticism for a bring your own policy during their press conferences.

3 Arod will choke

4 Cano will make 40 errors
5 The Yankees start losing  and Hank Steinbrenner will blame injuries and how the rules aren't fair.

6 Susan Waldmen(spelling ?) will humiliate the Yankees again by being a drama queen

7 John Sterling will humiliate the Yankees with stupid calls and being a drama king

8 Yankees will lose in first round of playoffs

9 Yankee fans will laugh about how stupid other teams are for not spending money they dont have.

10 Yankee fans will justify their ridiculous payroll by saying their owners put their money into the team. Ignoring the fact that the Yankees can spend 230 million on payroll and still make more than these other teams who supposedly pocket the whopping 27 million they receive spread out amongst like ten teams. Wow, a whole 3 million certainly could buy them a backup catcher.

Yankees 2009 - Bold Predictions by Stick

Bold predictions to say the least...

I'm a Yankee fan too, originally from Brooklyn, have lived in the midwest for 25 years , still attend approx 10-20 games a year in the big apple ( and the price is killing me ), and will go to my resting place with those pinstripes in my heart.

I agree the Yanks should win around 100 games if they stay healthy. Mariano has been a hall of fame warrior for them for a long time- it's time they primed his replacement ( maybe Joba ..?)  A-Rod is a great player but has never found success in the playoffs ( not confident he ever will either) ..Jeter is and will always be the catalyst for success for this team- as he goes - the Yanks go ! Hopefully Tex will fill the void Chambliss left ( Giambi was never a steady all round performer ) . Wang is still the best pitcher on this staff ( Sorry CC & A.J. - you still have to prove your worthy) Forget the individual awards , lets play consistent baseball, think about the awards later. Beat teams like the Sox - both Red & White, the Angels, and now Tampa Bay   consistently then we'll see if the true Yanks have re-emerged.

So far the biggest loss the Yanks have is no "Joe Torre" - the Yanks are lost without him - this is the biggest blunder of the current front office. Girardi is not the answer .......I wish I were incorrect about a lot that's written above but I'm probably not ! Opening Day I'll be sitting above 3rd base with high hopes again , just like I do every other year .... Go Yanks !

Yankees 2009 - Bold Predictions by Stick

As far as me liking AJ and Kazmir...was it right for Romeo to fall in love with Juliet?  My brother's guilty pleasure is listening to Abba when he's in his car alone.  Mine just happens to be watching Kazmir and AJ (when he was with the Jays) pitch.  HA!

Hughes went 0-4 last year with a 6.62 ERA, a .314 BAA,  and a 1.71 WHIP.  If that's not getting "bombed" then I don't know what is.  Were those numbers a direct result of not playing healthy?  I hope so because I can't keep eating Tums like M&Ms every time he pitches.

Burnett might have had a 4.07 ERA last year but he had more than a K per inning and a .249 batting average against.  He also had 18 wins...including wins against LAA, Boston, NYY, at Texas, at Philly, Cubs, TB, CWS, etc.  He's a big time pitcher and I truly believe that the next 2-3 years will be very special for AJ and the Yankees.  I know, I know, the Yankees have him for 5 years but I'll take 3 good years before he starts to lose some zing on his fastball.

Are you from Montana or Iraq?  Hoping "that baseball has a full-on collapse" is borderline un-American and, in my mind, grounds for a treason trial.

Yankees 2009 - Bold Predictions by Stick

I just read a blog called Sickels' Yankee top 21 by nynasty.  It talks all about the Yankees' top prospects.  Definitely worth a read.
