I was listening to the Teixera press conference today and as he spoke it made me ponder a few things that have hit me in the past few years as a fan of sports. Of course he was saying all the right things such as how proud he was to be a Yankee and how his favorite park was Yankee Stadium but he was also bringing up how he wanted to win and lead this team. As he spoke he just seemed to be on a different plateau than the other high priced sluggers that we have brought in over the past 6 years. The smile and nod approach seemed to get most new Yankees a pass and they always showed up with the bat throughout the regular season but never led the team to the promise land and that really hasn't been seen since the 90's.
I guess some of you could bring up Jeter and Posada somewhere along the line in this arguement but they always had Tino, Oneill and a young healthy Bernie Williams alnogside them. Over the past few years it has been the likes of Abreu, Giambi and of course Madonnas lesser half A Rod. All had huge bats in the regular season but failed to lead when it counts.
Hopefully what I heard from Tex was not a show and he really steps up to the plate (no pun intended) and takes this team where it belongs. I may just have 400 million dollar blinders on but he really seems to be Captain material and I hope that he shows this to the fans and Yankee brass at some point in his Yankee career.
