The Longest Month of the Year!

Posted on: January 27, 2009 6:32 am

February, hard to spell for some and hard to deal with for the random sports fan. I know there is basketball but if you are a "meat and potatoes" sports fan this month is equal to a visit to the Dentist. There seems to be no hope as the snow falls and it seems less likely that the baseball season will ever start again. Why is this so painful? We should be thinking about the positive points of the season with anticipation of the new kids on the farm coming up or the 300 pound LB that we are targeting in the draft but no, we are keying in on how stupid it is that the football season isn't a month longer or how the baseball season should start sooner!!

Is this what we have become? Are we what our wives and families see? Yes, we are true fans. (Or idiots, depends on which one you ask.) We live and die with our teams and support them through the good and the bad and live with the pain of the new Joe Torre book that came out yesterday proclaiming that the Yankee third basemen was dubbed A-Fraud! (I am not bitter!) as well as the speculation that the owner of my beloved Dallas Cowboys is doing a reality TV show during training camp AGAIN as the team is having enough trouble focusing on the game itself. Yes, we the fans deal with the reality and stupidity of our teams even through this long painful month.

I am sure that there are plenty of you out there with me on this and all I can tell you is that there is hope. There is a light at the end of the tunnel and you are all stronger than that poor sap with the Dentist appointment for one reason and one reason only!! There is no novacaine for February.

The Longest Month of the Year!

I totally understand where all of you are coming from, I am definitely a true sports fan of all the major sports but NFL and MLB are my favorite as far as pro sports go. But I am also a huge College Basketball fan, so February not as lonely as it could be. I follow my beloved Kentucky Wildcats (oooh tough loss to So. Carolina on our home floor last night). I play a little fantasy Basketball to occupy my time, true it's not Football or Baseball but it kind curbs that craving for Fantasy sports until MLB gets started. Well at least today is Super Bowl, hope we have a good competitive game. To bad my Redskins didn't make it, oh well they never do anymore.

The Longest Month of the Year!

I see where you guys are coming from. This is strange as it seems like a sports help group. I feel like I should have stood up and told you guys my name before I posted the comment. I enjoy the other sports but i relaly love the big two. Thanks for the replies.

The Longest Month of the Year!

I definitely feel you on this one.

There's nothing really to talk about because there's no information out there. Mock drafts are absolutely meaningless now because coaching staffs are still being assembled (Some teams don't even have head coaches!). In baseball, many of the top tier free agents have already been signed, and nothing really changes for weeks.

Fortunately for my Cleveland Browns, we're in the middle of yet another regime change - so there's always something new going on.

Look at it this way: without the tough times we wouldn't appreciate the good ones!

The Longest Month of the Year!

To an extent I know what you mean.  I'm beginning to miss football already and it's only been a week and a half.  As for baseball,  I'm a big Cleveland Indians fan, and have been eagerly awaiting the new season since November.

However, I actually enjoy these long winter months, as some of the less recognized sports get to shine.  Ironically, there are probably more sports active in February than any other time of the year.  I know its hard to watch the Knicks (I'm a fan as well) but true fans need to experience suffering to make the good moments feel special.  Also, you should give Nascar or the PGA a try.  They both grew on me when I was looking for something to watch on those boring weekends.  Now I look forward to them and enjoy them each season.  The NHL is coming down the home stretch, too.  Pick a team and start cheering.
