Rd.1 Best Rock Album of the 80's (WEST BRACKET)

Alpha Region:

1. Appetite for Destruction '87 - Guns 'n' Roses (Husker Du?.... what in the world?)

9. Hi Infidelity '80 - REO Speed wagon (Talk about hooks)

5. Love at First Sting '84 - Scorpions (Flat -out rocks)

4. Brothers in Arms '85 - Dire Straits (Knopfler at his best, title track is sooo good)

3. Full Moon Fever ' 89 - Tom Petty (Jeff Lynne is a musical genius)

6. Hysteria '87 - Def Leppard (Wore out the tape in 1987)

10. Sports '83 - Huey Lewis & the News (I don’t get the whole Prince thing. Never have, never will)

2. Pyromania '83 - Def Leppard (Love 5150, but Pyromania is too good)

Delta Region:

1. The Joshua Tree '87 - U2 (Incredible songwriting)

9. Rebel Yell '83 - Billy Idol (Tough call, Graceland is really good)

5. 90125 '83 - Yes (Flawless)

13. Screaming for Vengeance '82 - Judas Priest (Same as Prince, I don’t get the MJ hype, not rock in my book)

14. Texas Flood '83 - Stevie Ray Vaughan (In Step is the superior SRV album, he was sober and it showed in the writing)

6. Paradise Theater '81 - Styx (Not as good as the 70’s Grand Illusion or Pieces of Eight, the 80‘s were not kind to Styx)

7. 4 '81 - Foreigner (Hard to vote against Seger, but 4 is rock ear candy)

2. Eliminator '83 - ZZ Top

(I like Afterburner better, but I see the appeal of Eliminator)

Rd.1 Best Rock Album of the 80's (WEST BRACKET)

Allrighty.  West Bracket choices:

Alpha Region -

1.  Guns N Roses - Appetite for Destruction - Another great alternative album getting a crap draw (see Pixies, Doolittle in East bracket).  But going with GNR here.  Hard not to miss them on the radio for about a year following this release.

8.  Metalica - ...And Justice for All - Metalica easy.  Excellent LP.  HiInfidelity turned a band that rocked live into a group reaching for a bunch of schlocky pop hits.

12.  Def Leppard - High n Dry - Great Scorpions LP but when I first heard High n Dry I became a Def Leppard fan.

5.  Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms - While it doesn't rock out (I don't think Dire Straits ever really did) this is a beautiful LP.

3.  Tom Petty - Full Moon Fever - Petty begins his relationship with Jeff Lynne.  Quite a turn for Petty but help revive him and his career.

6.  Def Leppard - Hysteria - How did three Leppard LPs make the same region?  Not my fave Leppard LP but much better than Roxy Music.

7.  Prince - Purple Rain - Many think this is "the" Prince LP.  Some really great tunes, great guitars, great dance songs.

2.  Def Leppard - Pyromania - Rockin follow up to High n Dry.  Saw them on this tour.  Too many VH songs with Sammy sounded like Pepsi commercials to me.

Delta Region -

1.  U2 - The Joshua Tree - Like with the GNR album above, you couldn't escape U2.  In another matchup, I'd probably go with the excellent "Ghost in the Machine."

8.  Paul Simon - Graceland - Love me some Billy Idol but this Simon disc is phenominal.

5.  Yes - 90125 - Tough matchup again but I thought the production on the Yes LP was outstanding.

13.  Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance - Michael Jackson...  OK, best selling LP ever but really.  Have you listened to it lately.  Very dated.  And perhaps very overrated.  And I still crank it up when I hear "You Got Another Thing Comin'"

3.  The Clash - London Calling - Hard to pick a fave Clash LP but this one's great.  Tough not to vote for SRV though.  He's a God here in Austin TX.

6.  Styx - Paradise Theater - Another tough call since these a polar opposites.  Giving it to the "pretty" LP.  Don't know why really.

7.  Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band - Against the Wind - another I went back and forth over.  "4" is a good Foreigner disc though not as good as their 70's LPs IMO.

2.  ZZ Top - Eliminator - It was a good LP, wasn't it?  A bit embarrassed though since I prefer earlier ZZ Top but a really solid effort.

I thought this was harder than the 70's because the 80's weren't as good musically.  And I must say I am VERY disappointed that NO Replacements album made the top 64.  Thanks again for all the work put in Cleveland!

Rock in peace.
