Rd. 1 Best Rock Album of the 80's (EAST BRACKET)

Wow, some tough choices here and hard decisions to make.  Here are my East bracket choices:

Beta Region -

16.  The Pixies - Doolittle - personally I like this huge upset even knowing AC/DC will probably win.  Yeah, AC/DC rocks, especially on this LP, but Doolittle was the album that turned me on to the Pixies.  The Pixies got a bad draw here.  An awesome disc and personal favorite.

9.  The Pretenders - The Pretenders - slight upset here.  Combat Rock was a fairly weak effort and swan song for the Clash, "Straight to Hell" being the best song.  The debut album for the Pretenders was completely fresh and I love it still.

5.  Master of Puppets - Metalica - not a huge metal fan but I know what I like.  Metalica here.

13.  Aerosmith - Permanent Vacation - another upset!  I thought Dr. Feelgood was also a weak effort and Permanent Vacation I felt marked a huge comeback/return to form for Aerosmith.

14.  Peter Gabriel - So - Alot of lower seeds so far.  Which LP on a desert island, right?  I'll take "So" which was solid the whole way through.

11.  The Scorpions - Blackout - Giving this to the band that stood the test of time.  Biggest hit for Quiet Riot was a cover tune (but a good one).  The Scorpions were near the top of their game here.

10.  Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes - This debut album, along with REM's "Murmur", really launched what was termed college radio/music.  And it is a solid disc as well.

2.  Van Halen - 1984 - People who love Motorhead really love Motorhead but I can't say I am one of them.  Yes, VH went commercial here.  Yes, they moved to synths for the first time here.  Yes, it ballooned David Lee Roth's ego.  Still a very good LP.

Charlie Region -

1.  Pink Floyd - The Wall - Easy even against Van Halen.  It's The fracking Wall for cryin' out loud.

8.  Journey - Escape - Toughest call yet for me.  This is a great Journey LP and they too reached the heights of their sucess with this album.

Toughest call until this next one maybe...

12.  Beastie Boys - Licenced to Ill - This was a hard choice even though I nominated the Beastie's LP and not the Crue's.  That was one helluva breakthrough LP by the Crue and I still have the LP with original cover art.  But after pondering and going back and forth I am giving my pick to the Beastie's debut LP which brought, for good or ill, Jewish white rappers into the mainstream.

4.  Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet - I am already hating this pick.  I am in no way a Bon Jovi fan.  My favorite line from Beavis and Butthead was Beavis asking, "Do you remember when Bon Jovi was cool," and Butthead replying, "Uh, huhhuhhuh, no."  I guess I am giving it to Jovi for the softish, popish rock anthems on it.

3.  Bruce Springsteen - Born in the USA - mainly because I didn't own the Satriani LP.  Not the strongest Bruce effort and a bit commercial for my liking.  The title track was turned into a patriotic anthem which ironically it isn't supposed to be.  LOL!  Dancing in the Dark was big time commercial Bruce.

11.  Judas Priest - British Steel - Two reasons here.  First, this Priest album flat out rocked!  Second, Poison (IMO) represented everthing that was wrong and horrible about hair/glam metal and helped to give Brett Michaels a crappy reality show.

7.  Talking Heads - Speaking in Tongues - The Heads album, despite the two big hits by Toto on "IV", was a MUCH stronger effort.  Burning Down the House, Making Flippy Floppy, Girlfirend is Better, Slippery People, Swamp and This Must Be The Place are all very recognizable when heard even if you don't know the song titles.

2.  Rush - Moving Pictures - Excellent album.  Tom Sawyer; one of the best rock tracks ever.  Side one I can play again and again and again and again....  I like Billy Joel but didn't care for his turn and ode to Doo Wop.

Thanks again Cleveland!  Love the music polls and brackets and thanks for indulging me and allowing me to toss in my two cents.  Hope I didn't offend anyone to much with my opinions.

Rock on y'all in peace!

Rd. 1 Best Rock Album of the 80's (EAST BRACKET)

Beta Region: AC/DC, Pretenders, Metallica, Aerosmith, Police, Scorpions, Skid Row, Van Halen

Charlie Region: Floyd, Journey, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Springsteen, Judas Priest, Toto, Rush

Some tough matchups and some surprises.  Dr. Feelgood vs Permanent Vacation.  Neither of those albums were that good (and I like Motley and love Aerosmith and bought both albums).  Both had some good songs, but with the emphasis on best album, I was surprised to see either of them in the bracket.  Did you ever hear Without You?  Holy crap!  That is just a horrible song.
