Greatest atmosphere in college sports

Yes my team lost. They lost to the better team. Their weakness was exposed and still I think it will be their demise in the tournament but last nights Duke/UNC game is the reason why I love college basketball more than anything. If you don't like sports you would enjoy that game. The emotion and passion every kid plays with is remarkable. It is the way defense is suppose to be played. It is the effort you dream any of your players will give. It is the greatest atmosphere in all of college sports. I am not knocking a trip to The Swamp, the Golden Dome or Ohio St/ Michigan football. They are all special. That game last night just seems to be what is absolutely right in sports. When played at that level the game of basketball just seems poetic and graceful. The Cameron Crazies are absolutely wonderful. You find yourself watching them as much as the game itself. I was hoping speedo man would make another appearance. So I pose this question and as I have stated I am not here to bash anyones school or their rivalries. If you had one ticket and one ticket only for the rest of your life what sporting event would you go to? There is no doubt in my mind UNC/Duke at Cameron is my choice. It has nothing to do with the outcome of the game but the atmosphere, intensity and respect the two teams, the coaches and schools have for one another. It is more than a game. The names on the back of your shirt do not matter. The NBA prospects on the floor on that night do not matter. The rankings do not matter. The records do not matter. The only thing that matters is the name on the front on the jersey and how you will do anything in your power to make every student, alumnus and fan proud of your effort win, lose or draw!

A very tough place to play that totally gets ignored by everyone except the teams that have to go visit there is Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.  Even when Iowa State doesn't have a good team, the rabid ISU fans give the home team a huge lift.  Ask Kansas, Missouri, Kansas State, Nebraska, or any other big 12 school how tough it is to play there.  Sits behind Kansas and just ahead of
Gallagher-Iba Arena down at Oklahoma State.  Tough road venues for any team.  Great atmospheres.  Top 10 or 15 in the country.

You have to separate out the football and basketball venues.  In football, I'll agree with Nebraska in the Big 12 and LSU elsewhere in D1.  In Division 2, Pittsburg St., no h on that, in Kansas has a double deck stadium that holds as many people as the town's population, and they fill it all the time, and my alma mater NW Mo. whose small stadium holds 9000 and students watch the games from the dorms just north of the stadium as well.  I'll agree with Kansas and New Mexico State having great atmosphere, with Duke not far behind.

Greatest atmosphere in college sports

Greatest atmosphere of a college sporting event I have attended is Kenan Stadium.

Cameron is way over rated. The fans are great College Sports fans, but no better, or cleverer, or more dedicated than fans in countless other schools throughout the land.  The gym, and whole structure appears to be unsafe. There were numerous slips by players on both teams Wed. night, due to apparent condensation and sweat puddles left on the floor. Why the coach insists on turning the heat on is beyond me, just plain silly.  The football stadium there, where I have been several times, is run down as well.  Its a filthy place.  I understand a student contracted Meningitis by camping in the mud at Cameron. Too many people listen to Dick Vitale when he hypes the "cameron crazies" and the whole venue.  The fans are great, and the place rocks during a game, WITHOUT QUESTION.   But the same was true at my Cummings High School Gym in Burlington NC.

Probably not the greatest game-in and game-out, but once or twice every year, The Pit in Albuquerque is awesome.  GO LOBOS!
